OK so I haven't worked much with Linux before but since there was a server lying around in my house I'd thought I'd try to turn it into a gaming server. I so I got the Gentoo Universal CD and put it the Sun Ultra 5 IIi and when I try to install it using the boot from cd-rom command I get an Illegal Instruction error after it checks the memory and such. When I looked around the Gentoo website it said that I need a kernel called 2.4.32-sparc-r4 but when I looked I couldn't find it for download. Its getting really annoying because it seems Gentoo is the distribution that will work with the server so I need some help.

Please help! I will provide more information if necessary.

sounds like a hardware issue....
what happens if you try a different bootcd? maybe debian-sparc (http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/4.0_r0/sparc/iso-cd/)
if you get the same error, it is most likely a hardware issue, if not...we can troubleshoot further.

sithguy

You need the install-sparc64-universal-2007.0.iso, that should be fine on a IIi CPU
Did it download properly ?

Ned - That's the one I downloaded and I think it downloaded properly because I didn't get any errors

Rizz - Ok tried the debian. Same thing. It says Illegal Instruction after the kernal ramdisk part.

Also its already got Solaris OS on it.

Try upgrading the OBP to the latest version to begin with, in the meantime you do "setenv auto-boot? false" in obp, power the machine off, back on and THEN try booting from cdrom (it's a stupid obp bug when booting solaris that leaves things messed up for other operating systems).

Ok the shut it down completely and start it up again worked but Gentoo could not find my ethernet connection or something,
so I installed Debian.

Thanks for all the help with the Sparc System. I couldn't have done it without you guys.

Another question arose: How do I run Windows apps on my server? I couldn't find Wine for Sparc so I was wondering if there was another way. I'm trying to run a game server that hosts games like Half-life, Unreal 2004, and Battlefield 1942.

sithguy,

You don't run Windows games on a Sparc CPU.

WINE provides the Windows API on Linux. The Windows programs execute natively on the CPU.
WINe makes them believe they have windows by doing what windows would do.

Ok, WINE DOESN'T WORK ON SPARC since it doesn't emulate an x86 cpu (and sparc is completely different), got it now?

i tried the livecd / boot cd on an ultra 5 too and failed. i googled a bit and think its a kernel bug. i was able to net boot it and install.

also, no windows apps will work on that. 333 MHz is too slow, and you would need an emulator too btw....

You can do most things that you can do with an x86 box with linux on it - appart from a few applications that require a x86 cpu (like wine does).

Running windows apps with an emulator (dont actually know of one since I havnt tried this) would be pig slow on that box anyway.

I used mine as a home e-mail / file server / firewall / LAMP server.

If you are going to run it as a Gaming Server, then depending on what game you want it to Serve, then it might be just fine. When you have a true server, you are not running the client on it as well, you don't need a graphics card, your not running wine, or anything like that. They make linux ports for many server side games. What games do you plan on making it serve?
