Obviously those new drivers can't read EDID under some circumstances. Somebody reported this problem at nvnews.net.
In the end he asked:
Any ideas? Have you been able to repro this in house?
Reply from the nvidia guru:
I'm afraid not. This problem appears to be specific to your environment.
Wow! Great answer. I'd like to hire that guy for our support hotline.

I suppose you'll have to get Googling for Modelines - here's a sample search which looks promising.

And also have a very thorough read:

Code: Select all

vi /usr/share/doc/nvidia-drivers-100.14.06/README.bz2
man gtf
Useful link: Modelines.

I think you would need one of these:

Code: Select all

Option "UseEDIDFreqs" "FALSE"
Option "UseEDIDDpi" "FALSE"
Option "ModeValidation" "NoEdidModes"
Read Nvidia's README as mentioned above.

hehe,,,,, yea right
Getting info from nvidia is like waiting for a miracle to happen.

For examlpe,,,,,,, we have been trying for months to get some kind of
information about the BWB "black window bug" in THEIR FORUM.

They finally decide to talk about it. BUT not with THEIR FORUM community.
BUT with some website that i and many others never heard of.

Haha yeah.

I used to have an ATI card, and just as I got it all working, I got this new machine and now I can't get much working. By that I mean suspend/hibernate. I had it all working on my ATI rig, and now nada

Heya beatryder
Unless you have a 8000 series card then there is no need for the new driver
which is still kinda buggy. The 9755 driver seems to work well with all pre 8000
series cards and the 8800.

EDIT: some info here

For what it's worth:

A 'need to install the beta drivers' would be exaggerating it, but I'm sticking to the newer drivers just because the black flickering using composite is ALMOST gone. No, it's not absolutely fixed, but they're close enough. Same for scrolling anti-aliased text. It's those minor things that get annoying really soon, once you notice them ...

I've seen those problems before myself. And fixed them with some xorg.conf
re configuration. The black flickering is not the same as BWB and the scrolling
anti-aliased text problem can also be fixed with some configuration changes
in xorg.conf or could be kernel related. Also keep in mind that due to improper
EDID freq detection by the Nvidia driver or improper EDID information in the
monitor itself which happens a lot, can cause problems. The easiest way to
overcome those is to do as a previous poster mentioned and use.

Code: Select all

Option "UseEDIDFreqs" "FALSE"
Option "UseEDIDDpi" "FALSE"
Option "ModeValidation" "NoEdidModes"
Then specify your own Modeline and DPI in your config. And always use your
monitors native resolution for best video quality/performance.

The scrolling problem could be a number of issues including
low memory available or even Cache Aliasing " you can read about
cache aliasing in the known problems link below". Some commands
that can be enabled or disabled to overcome this also are.

Code: Select all

Option	"UseEvents" "False"
Option	"DamageEvents" "True"
Option	"BackingStore" "True"
Option "TripleBuffer" "True"
You can look up these commands in the readme file Appendix B of any driver
and determine according to what card and vram you have to see how they affect
your config.
http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/L ... dix-b.html

And here is a link to known issues with this driver. Unfortunately most people
never bother to read these.

Follow PaulBredbury's link two posts above yours.

Rename the latest version of the ebuild you'll find (on bugzilla) to nvidia-drivers-100.14.09.ebuild. Put it in your local overlay.
Copy the files dir from the official portage tree, to the files dir to $OVERLAY/x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers/.
Digest with
ebuild $OVERLAY/x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers/nvidia-drivers-100.14.09.ebuild digest
And you should be able to install it.

Also, it's not a bad idea to name the ebuild nvidia-drivers-100.14.09_rc.ebuild. That way, when the official ebuild hits portage you'll be using the official one, which is almost always preferred...

Have any of you notebook users out there who use the nvidia beta drivers noticed any problems with suspend/resume? Particularly, with restarting Xorg and having it give an input/output error? Seems to only do it after suspend/resume (doesn't matter if its to disk or memory).

After reverting to 9755-r1, it works again. Has anyone else had this problem?

Actually Jupiter1TX I have to say that the new drivers are much better for me. My Fn+F8 CRT/LCD switch actually works in X. I have not seen a single other driver work that way.

Since you asked so nicely, a Geforce 8800 GTS. What else you might want to know I have no idea I'm afraid.

I'm not sure how my graphics card model could affect a segfault?
