In trying to migrate to the 2.6 kernel on an SS20 (sparc32), I believe the kernel needs to be under 2.5M to be bootable. I have pulled out everything that I do not need and set everthing I can to be modules, but the image is still ~2.7M. Any ideas before I surrender?

Note that one of my complications is that I am using software RAID and my root is ext3 on a RAID 0 partition. Boot is ext2 on /sda1.

silo.conf:
Code:
timeout = 100
partition = 1
default = linux-2.4.32-r2
root = /dev/md0
image = /kernel-2.4.32-r2
        label = linux-2.4.32-r2
        append="md=0,/dev/sda4,/dev/sdb4,/dev/sdc4,/dev/sdd4"

.config:
Code:
#
# Automatically generated make config: don't edit
# Linux kernel version: 2.6.20-gentoo-r5
# Thu Apr 19 14:05:12 2007

You could always try setting
Code:
HOSTCFLAGS   = -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -Os -fomit-frame-pointer
HOSTCXXFLAGS = -Os
CFLAGS          += -Os

in your /usr/src/linux/Makefile and see if that helps.

Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately it still seems to be ~2.7M.

That's the reason 2.4 is still around. In 2.6 they added more features in the kernel and optomized it making it larger. Sorry, don't think your going to get the kernel much lower than that.

But as part of the migration, I have unmerged devfs and emerged udev. Can I use udev under 2.4?

PanzerKanzler: Doing the -Os hack in the Makefile is completely unnecessary for 2.6 kernels - that's done as a kernel config option "Optimize for size".
BLK_DEV_SR can be M (cdrom), you don't need both ext2+ext3 as Y (actually you could just use ext3), SMP doesn't work right on sparc32 with 2.6 kernels and will reduce your kernel if it's UP, you don't need all of the I/O schedulers (you'd do fine with just AS and they're all Y),

Thanks for the suggestions, Gustavo. I did use the "Optimize for size" switch in the kernel, not the hack. I will try these suggestions today and let you know tomorrow. It takes several hours to compile a new kernel on this beast!

One question... Is RAID 0 on the root going to boot up ok as a module?

Updated .config that I will be building with today:

Is it the (compressed) image that needs to be less than 2.5M or the (uncompressed) vmlinux file? Cause the vmlinux file is way too high:

Code:
lavon linux # ls -l vmlinux
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 3396101 Apr 24 16:20 vmlinux

lavon linux # ls -lh vmlinux
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 3.3M Apr 24 16:20 vmlinux

Code:
lavon boot # ls -l image
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 2531527 Apr 24 16:20 image

lavon boot # ls -lh image
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 2.5M Apr 24 16:20 image

PanzerKanzler: Doing the -Os hack in the Makefile is completely unnecessary for 2.6 kernels - that's done as a kernel config option "Optimize for size".

Try stripping vmlinux:
Code:
burninator linux-2.6.20-nosmp # ll vmlinux
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 3549037 Feb 11 17:17 vmlinux
burninator linux-2.6.20-nosmp # strip -R .comment -R .note vmlinux
burninator linux-2.6.20-nosmp # ll vmlinux
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 2187044 Apr 26 01:46 vmlinux

I can't guarantee that will work as I can't test it since I netboot. For netbooting I run elftoaout on the image file and boot the result of that. If all else fails you could try doing just that... My pre elftoaout image is
Quote:
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 2613189 Feb 11 17:18 arch/sparc/boot/image
and elftoaout reduces it to
Quote:
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 2183392 Feb 11 17:20 image-2.6.20-nosmp-gcc4
which boots just fine on my SS20.

qtothemax: seems this is an informational thread, instead of running strip you can just "make image", that'll do the deed in a simple way :-)
starrbuck: yeah it's the uncompressed image that you need to boot.

But the Gentoo Handbook says to copy the compressed image to /boot:

Quote:
(For 2.6 kernel, sparc32)
# cp arch/sparc/boot/image /boot/<kernel-version>

Interesting, because strip reduced the vmlinux much smaller than make image did:

Code:
lavon linux # ls -l vmlinux
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1971340 Apr 26 10:35 vmlinux

Can I copy this to /boot and boot with it, or does it need to be the image from arch/sparc/boot? I tried running make image after strip and got this error:

Code:
lavon linux # make image
  CHK     include/linux/version.h
  CHK     include/linux/utsrelease.h
  CHK     include/linux/compile.h
  MODPOST vmlinux
FATAL: vmlinux has no symtab?
make[1]: *** [vmlinux] Error 1
make: *** [vmlinux] Error 2

make image after strip will probably fail, but basically yeah, make image does the strip, it's a shortcut to it.

But the vmlinux from the strip is much smaller than the image from the make image. Which one should I use? I am scared to reboot as I don't want to make the machine unbootable. What is your recommendation?

If the make image kernel fits then that would be fine.

PostPosted: Thu May 10, 2007 4:02 pm    Post subject: 2.4 -> 2.6 upgrade, kernel too big [solved] Reply with quote

Just to close out this issue, I gave up on this and ended up retiring (killing) the sparc32 system. The stripped kernel did not load for some reason, and since I had removed devfs in favor of udev, the 2.4 kernel was no longer bootable. Also, because there is no longer a sparc32 boot disc, and I have no other system available to boot from across the network, I had no way to reboot.

My only choice was to shoot this old sparc32 system in the brain and throw it in the garbage where it belongs. Thankfully, I had a newer sparc64-based system on standby and I have already successfully loaded Gentoo 2006.1 on it and it's humming along great with the 2.6 kernel along with everything I had loaded on the old system. I only wish I had waited a few more days so I could've loaded 2007.0. ;-)

Thank you all again for your help!
