When issuing:

ls -lu

you are supposed to see when a file was last read by an application. This works as expected on both RH and MDK, but not on Gentoo. Any reason why I experience this behaviour?

"mount" will tell you what each partition is mounted with; you see "noatime", access times aren't recorded. This increases performance (a lot in many cases), and access times aren't generally useful, anyway.
