PostPosted: Mon Mar 05, 2007 4:50 pm    Post subject: help! my gentoo install is trying to die! SOLVED Reply with quote

I have had this gentoo install for about six months, and its been perfect, but now I cant emerge anything, it always fails! I dont know what I have done wrong.
Normally when I start getting emerge errors, I run revdep-rebuild and it fixes everything, now when I run it, it fails to emerge pmount

Please most your emerge --info.

Are you saying that *any* package you try to emerge fails?

I run a 64-bit install. I have emerged a lot of stuff since I last changed this file, and none of it had any problems

Also, I use an amd64 4200+ x2 processor, I think I use the correct -march, if not, which should I use?
I have the latest version of gcc that is stable installed and selected.

I had the same problem, for some reason in my make.conf there was a line "-mtune=1686"
its supposed to be -march, it took me awhile to realize this.
I'm guessing thats not the case for you guys though

well, its not a kernel problem, I tried everything w/ the 2.6.18 kernel (I currently use the 2.6.19) and it still didnt work.
though I saw this interesting line in the emerge/compile

checking for C compiler default output file name... configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables
See `config.log' for more details.

This error means the compiler failed to create an executable which can be run on your system. It can be caused by a build script attempting to run an executable built by a cross-compiler, or if the build script is invoking the compiler in such a way that the compiler aborts without building the requested program. Please post the last 100-200 lines of config.log, which should include any error messages from the compiler.

See `config.log' for more details.

The problem is reported with the line cc1: error: /usr/local/include: not a directory. What is /usr/local/include on your system? On mine it's a directory with mode 755, owned by root:root.

My /usr/local/include was replaced with a text document which I just read through, it looks like a misplaced header...
How do I get my /usr/local/include folder back?

well, now I know what the problem is, but is there a way to solve it?

Move aside or unlink the text document at /usr/local/include and create a directory in its place. You can do this by running these commands as root:

Code:
cd /usr/local && mv include old-include && mkdir include && chown root:root include && chmod 755 include

I suspect any packages you installed in /usr/local will need to be reinstalled. From your description, every header installed by those packages has been given the name /usr/local/include, rather than being placed in the directory /usr/local/include.

Perhaps you don't have dbus installed. Do you have it installed?

If not, then it is a bug since pmount depends on dbus.
