emerge search?

is there any command like debians apt-cache search wich allows me to search the portage tree?

why not just answer it, since its a pretty easy answer: emerge -s appname - will search the portage tree.

Well, yeah, that searches by package name. I thought a search by description might be more conclusive (as it also searches the package name).
