I am getting the error ..
Quote:
VFS: Cannot open root device /dev/hda3 or 03:03
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic etc etc etc :(

I know this has been posted a number of times but my situation seems a little different :?
I have a Sparc Ultra10 that has only IDE (no SCSI).
The boot and root fs's are both ext3

My silo.conf file is as follows

Quote:
image[sun4u]="/boot/vmlinuz"
label="gentoo"
root="/dev/hda3"

Any ideas - pleeeeeeaaasee - I have lost all of my hair on this one
Look -> this is me :wink:

Thanks

hi bigV,

i had this problem the first time i installed gentoo on sparc and that was because i forgot to compile the support for ide chipset on my old ultra5 (i think it's the same chipset on ultra10)

so if you already tried all thread about misconfiguration of silo and so on, try to tweak the option under
ATA/IDE/MFM/RLL support ---> IDE, ATA and ATAPI Block devices
the turn around for my ultra5 is to activate CMD64X and CMD680 chipset support

good luck

Double check that your /dev/hda3 partition isn't the wholedisk partition that's created when you make a sun disklabel.

If it's ok, can you post some more info, like your silo.conf and a listing of your partitions?

You can use the following to print a listing
Code:
fdisk -l /dev/hda

Thanks fidzysss and everyone who pointed me in the right direction.

I have sorted it it now. :D
At first I thought I had SCSI rather than IDE - that was until I removed the cover to have a look!! :wink:

Then I thought it was a SILO/VFS error - this turned out to be a red herring.

fidzysss sorted it with the IDE chipset stuff. I am now on my way to emergeing xfree and then to enlightenment.
If this is successfull, I will be trying it on a Sunfire with two SCSI discks (mirrored) - I love a challenge.

Thanks again!!

Oh my god. I wish this topic had come up last Thursday - spent the whole day farting about compiling kernels and fiddling with silo.conf\fstab till I figured it.

Sigh. Should have posted... :oops:

Aw well. I am now the proud owner of my first Sparc Gentoo. And a wonderful improvement over the bear that is Solaris it is too.
