I'm having big problems with Gentoo torrents. For some reason I can't establish any connections to other seeds or peers but still the trackes status is OK and I get the list of all the seeds and peers. I described the problem here but I got very little responses. And sadly the torrent maintainer curtis119 is not reachable or active (he hasn't posted to these forums for 5 months). There is also a 2 months old bug with no responses from devs.
Please try to download this torrent and tell me if it is working just like others. Also tell me how many seeds you can actually connect to and how long it took:
http://torrents.gentoo.org/torrents/install-x86-minimal-2006.1.torrent
(If you can only connect to a few seeds, then something is definitely wrong)
It has over 60 seeds right now but I can't establish any connections to them at all (after trying 10 minutes). Sometimes I get one single established connection but most connections just time out. Another torrents on another trackers work 100% fine without any problems and my NAT is properly configured.
Thank you for your help! And please leave a message if the torrent does indeed work for you as I need some help to debug this! |

Yes, not looking good. Of course I hope he is OK. In the meanwhile, he is apparently not maintaining Gentoo torrent tracker anymore so someone should take over until he is back. Who is responsible for assigning this to another maintainer? Maybe I should file a bug?
The problem is that more than a few users are having problems with the torrents and there is no maintainer. I'm sure there are many users who wish to download Gentoo using torrents so this should be fixed. |

Thanks for all the (poll) answers! It is now evident that the Gentoo torrent tracker is broken.
A new maintainer is now needed! |

Yes, the tracker appears to be broken. I do believe I know the cause, but I have no idea who to contact about it.
At the moment, I'm plodding about in IRC to see if I can find someone. |

FYI: as at 26-Feb-2007, using Azureus 2.5.0.4 behind a Billion Bipac 7402vgo router, with 3 other torrents downloading madly, the gentoo torrent shows 14 seeds, 3 peers and no throughput. (unlike the other 3 torrents downloading at a total of over 200kBs) _________________ ...Lyall |

I believe this issue has been identified - but not yet fixed. Just see the bug report. |

I wish torrents were more widely used for distributing Gentoo... _________________ iMac G4 1GHz :: q6600 //2x 500GB//2GB RAM//8600GT//Gentoo :: MacBook Pro//2.53GHz |

I agree. But see this:
http://linuxtracker.org/index.php?sort=9
There are actually many torrents (distros) that have been loaded over 100 000 times. That's not too bad. And at present there are over 50 000 users downloading Suse Linux Enterprise.
But having a broken torrent tracker without any notification for months is not the way to promote the usage of torrents or usage of Gentoo! |
