Really cool video. That must be a pretty fast computer, I know for a fact that my computer couldn't do that. I was just amazed at how quickly GNOME came up. It takes about 5 secs to load up KDE on mine, even if you just logged out of it a minute ago. And after I log out it can take up to 10 secs to get back to the login screen.

Makes me want a new computer.

Wow, that was really nice, do you have a link to that GDM theme and are you using the x11 video output for mplayer?

This is just amazingly cool, thanks for sharing it.

I just had to make a blog post with this in the hope of getting the people I know who stay away from Linux because windows is "pretty" to think twice.

My friend was telling me about how to do something like that. What do I need to make the windows stretch out like that? and those crazy effects when windows open and close?

Yes, that's what I meant, sorry :) That's quite interesting then because both my ATI cards (9250/9600XT) choke on the mplayer gl/gl2 outputs - my 9250 locks the entire system! The x11 output works for me under AIGLX but is painfully slow. More proof I guess that Nvidia is the way to go if you want a fancy Linux desktop :?

try adding -cache 8000 and see if it cleans up the output a little.

What the hell is *.rmx I never seen this extension before. I doesn't open right in Konqueror, it just displays some text on a white background. Had to use firefox. Nice video BTW.

well i build the site in xml so i can quickly update it no matter where i am if i need to, just by editing the xml file, rmx is just my xml extension, if the browser can open xml, it can open .rmx, but it may not render correctly or at all, cause i haven't tested it on too many different browsers and platforms... sorry. i'll update it to a more sensible RoR site in the near future.

I was talking about the -vo gl/gl2 speed/latency issues. Running it with xv generally doesnt cause any issues.

running the gl/gl2 video out option with -cache greatly improves its performance.

although I am a "standards" kind of guy, and I was confused by the rmx as well, I am also a web develop noob, and I have never used xml. Your site has got me interested in it.

so is xml used to standardize layout and thats it? i.e. do people use xml for layout and css for text formatting/colors? I have limited knowledge and experience with CSS, but I like the simplicity that xml formatting *seems* to have (set me strait though).

Very nice. You've inspired me, and I now want to buy a new laptop so that I can get a videocard that could actually let me do that.

i'm a "standards" kind of guy also... i actually learned everything from w3cschools.

xml is used to standardize data. so it's really easy for me to update each xml file. no clutter no junk. and i can easily make a flash site for example using these same xml pages if i wanted to, i just don't have the time right now.

xhtml is just a certain type of xml (as rmx is just a certain type of xml), and yes css is used for text formatting, layout, colors, everything else!

use xhtml for websites though, my site is just an experiment, xhtml has been thought through by many many experts and it includes all the tags you'd ever need for any website... tags just define what types of data will be presented within. (p tags for paragraph text, h1 tags for header text etc.) read the dtd and stick to the standards...
