You might try
Code:
CFLAGS="-O2 -mtune=i586 -pipe"

In most cases this means that you ran out of memory. Have you activated your swap partition? Try to observe your memory with "free" during compiling.

Changing the CFLAGS and CXXFLAGS didn't help I'm afraid. Same error.

I rebooted the system and this is the output from "free".

Code:

dibbuk ~ # free
total       used       free     shared    buffers     cached
Mem:         93676      56476      37200          0       2096      20948
-/+ buffers/cache:      33432      60244
Swap:       127000          0     127000

I think I have activated swap, seems like it, but not sure. Other "large" compilations have worked and my current gcc version is 4.1.1. I'll try again and look at the memory usage.

Also could be disk space for temp storage - check 'df -h' if I were you. But like mv said, esp with 128Mb of RAM you'll want to add more, make sure you've got swap, or ideally both (SD-RAM can be picked up pretty cheaply)

Since this is a AMD-K5, 133 MHz, 92 MB RAM, monster I'll have to get back to you on the different tests, however it seems not to be the RAM or swap.

I saw that the /usr-partition was nearly full, however I have a symbolic link /usr/tmp -> /var/tmp where /var also is a partition. I removed some old kernel sources, this means that after unpacking the gcc package:
Code:

dibbuk ~ # df -h
Filesystem            Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda3             869M   37M  788M   5% /
udev                   46M  108K   46M   1% /dev
/dev/hdb1             1.0G  518M  454M  54% /var
/dev/hdc1             2.4G  1.7G  641M  73% /usr
shm                    46M     0   46M   0% /dev/shm

Restarted the emerge, I'll keep you posted.

I'm wondering if 400Mb in /var/tmp is enough.... Should be I'd've thought, but I know e.g. OOo needs around 2Gb depending on your ram (seem to recall someone having a similar issue with openoffice, which was eventually tracked down to him having 512Mb of tmpfs on /var/tmp & it running out of temp storage. Though not necessarily the case here)

If you've got some patience and another machine, perhaps you could nfs mount some bigger partition for testing purposes?

I have the same error and I DON'T have memory prob.s (1 GB ram, 1 GB swap). It happened after I changed my profile from amd64/nomultilib to amd64/desktop.

eirkeim, have you recently change your profile?

I tried that, but then I got an error generated from "emerge" that the program could not change permissions.

Quote:

Answer is "no", I think :)
Code:

dibbuk ~ # ls -las /etc/make.profile
0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 46 Sep 18 18:28 /etc/make.profile -> /usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/2006.1

The emerge/compile is still running, meaning that the point of the first error has been passed.

Hi,

I do experience similar problem, except that xgcc is not killed but terminated:

xgcc: Internal error: Terminated (program cc1)
Please submit a full bug report.

This problem occured with both, gcc-4.1.1 as well as gcc-4.1.1-r1.

I did not change my profile or anyhting.
It's just a simple firewall machine, which has to do nothing fancy but running iptables and a few small services (ssh, stunnel).

What did you do to fix it?
I still have the problem... could you help me out?

I think my problem might have been that the space in /usr/tmp was to small. You've checked all that the responders suggested? And what does the error say prior to your screendump?

Well, 4.3Gb free space should be enough I would think...

I don't know what the error says above my screen dump as I cannot get that info on screen anymore.
I will run 'emerge gcc' again and have the output written to a file. As the compiling upto the point of error takes about half a day, I won't be able to post the info right away, but I will as soon as I have the result.

As free memory seems not to be the problem, the issue is not solved for me yet. So, could you please remove the "[solved]" part from the subject (so other people might take a look as well to help me...)
Thanks very much in advance.

Regards,
tfg

So... it has been compiling for several hours, but nothing was done :S
I have 4.3 Gb of free hdd space on which / is mounted, including all its subdirs (excpet /home), that should be enough I would say?

This is weird!!!
It now just quit emerging without finishing properly and without any errorcode !!!

So the problem is non-reproducible and occasionally something strange happens (in your example, apparently python died too early). This sounds to me like a hardware problem, see Compilation failure metabug.

Well, this last error only happened the last time.
The previous mentioned error I got al the other times (5 or 6 times).

I've had no problems at all when updating lots of other packages (part of 'emerge -u world').

I just started a new retry, this time again without 'tee' (because the only time it failed without error messages I had used 'tee' for output to screen and file). In about half a day from now I will be able to post the result.

There seems to be still enough free disk space:
Code:

Anyone any idea what could cause this problem? And how to fix it?

I got the same error when I compiled my gcc-4.1.1-r1. Firstly, I think maybe my gcc is not correct. So I downgrade my gcc to 3.4.5, and then emerge gcc. It's successful!!!
Then I change my gcc to 4.1.1 again to emerge gcc 4.1.1, but this time successful.
After rebooting my system, I emerge -e system, when it go to the GCC, the ERROR occurs again!!!
I am frustrated!!

I was getting the same error and had none of the memory problems.

However right now it is compiling and here is my solution
Code:
emerge -e system

Cheers!

Got it fixed !! :)

I noticed that while compiling the harddisk was extremely intensively used, which I suspected to be memory swapping.
As my server has 'only' 64meg of memory and a 128meg swappartition (which should be more than enough for just a simple firewall server) I decided to make an unused 6.2GB partition the new swap partition. With this enormous amount of swap space, gcc compiled without any error.

So apparently, compiling the new gcc takes to much memory for a simple linux server.
