I just finished installing my gentoo system, setup a nice slim WM, xfce4, an awsome WM, but... I decided to setup some sweet effects, so I setup beryl.

Beryl works fine, I get all these cool effects, but I can't right click on the desktop for the xfce menu and stuff. Any suggestions on how to get my desktop back?

I don't know if I have the solution since you are using beryl instead of xfwm as your WM, but try deleting ~/.config and ~/.cache. It sounds like that old Xfce4 bug.

I tried that, no avail. It actually made things worse. Now when beryl loads up, the screens are black.... lol

https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=155490 <---might try what is said in the bug on how to start up beryl. It seems to work for at least a few users. Upstream is informed about it, but I can't seem to reproduce the problem on my xfce4 desktop.

Try starting xfdesktop after Beryl has started.

Starting xfdesktop after beryl does allow me to use the background (I haven't read the thread yet that was posted here)
However, when I start beryl these are the things it says, any worries I should have? Should I have XGL with beryl??? Should I use aquamarine instead of emerald and stuff. All I have right now is the nvidia graphics with beryl, so any suggestions on w hat I should use would be great :-)
I'm on a 32 mb memory nvidia card on a dell inspiron 8200 right now (but beryl works great on it with minimal resources, can you believe it, on a 32 mb vid card?)

Otherwise, manually kill your wm, and report the bug to the developers, it doesn't follow the standards.
Falling back to looking for a defined WM in xlsclients.

Yes, that does indeed work. Unfortunately, I couldn't find a way to do that automatically. Any suggestions?

I either have the XFCE "Autostarted Applications" started, including beryl-manager, but then beryl-manager is set to use xfwm4, or beryl is started with beryl as WM and therefore I don't have the (other) XFCE "Autostarted Applications" running and no XFCE desktop (eg. no right-click menu on the desktop).

I had the same problem, but after updating to the most recent Xfce packages, it worked.
