I cant emerge -c packages, it locks up..
I cant emerge packages, it locks up (look other post) sed goes defunct.
I cant emerge back php,mysql.. and mysql binaries are segmenting.

Well if I had the chance to quit gentoo, I would but now its too late. I am stuck with it, since its running as co-located servers now.

What I dont understand is, I ran Gentoo perfectly, fine for a half year
and now suddenly everything is going wrong..

This started to happen like since yesterday ? or something, well I cant recall i did anything special that can cause that. So is this just weird or am I just too stupid ? I cant seem to have any IDEA what can be causing this.

when I reboot, this problem would be solved, but sometimes it popback again, and only a reboot will solve it.
And since I cant emerge a new gcc, (read other thread for my other problems). This is another x-file for me.

Can you re-emerge sed? Maybe build a tarball (emerge sed -b) on another box and install that?

These are total shots in the dark...

This is an off the wall suggestion... I noticed some errors like:

Code:
configure.in:201: warning: AC_TRY_RUN called without default to allow cross compiling

Code:
checking whether the C compiler (gcc -march=i686 -O3 -pipe ) works... no

When you compiled your kernel, did you change the arch to an i686 processor family? I remember in the make.conf it mentioned that '-march i686' will cause problems with binaries if used on another architecture.

I am using the Vanilla-source kernel,
before that I used the Gentoo one, I didnt had to change alot in the config,
but 1 thing is sure, in both kernel, I had this option:
(Pentium-Pro/Celeron/Pentium-II) Processor family

and my /etc/make.conf is from the very beginning (stage1?).

# Pentium Pro/Pentium II/Pentium III+/Pentium 4/Athlon exclusive (binaries
# will use the P6 instruction set and only run on P6+ systems)
CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu"
CFLAGS="-march=i686 -O3 -pipe"
CXXFLAGS="-march=i686 -O3 -pipe"

I already tried changing the settings in /etc/make.conf from "march" to mcpu, but the problem didnt disappear.

# Pentium Pro/Pentium II/Pentium III+/Pentium 4/Athlon optimized (but binaries
# will run on any x86 system)
CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu"
CFLAGS="-mcpu=i686 -O3 -pipe"
CXXFLAGS="-mcpu=i686 -O3 -pipe"

I have to add, the LAST thing I did on my box, 2 weeks ago, was a kernel update from Gentoo kernel to Vanilla-source kernel, because Iptables wasnt working in Gentoo kernel. Kernel compiled perfectly, and been using it without problems, these problems MAYBE caused by the kernel switch. Not sure though, I might try switch back to Gentoo kernel tonight, and try that, hope I saved that kernel >:|

A rule I try to stick by when troubleshooting is:

If the software environment does not change, the symptoms should not change. If it does, check the hardware.

Your symptoms seem random and started happening all at once, right? Hardware is what I would look at next but anything is possible. :?

I was thinking about that also, but you must understand, its a server co-located at a big ISP. So there isnt any hardware changes >:|
And it isnt really hard to notice problem, all it has is a, mainbord builtin vidcard +3com buildin LAN, cpu, 2 dimms, hd, cd-rom, fdd. Thats it :)

Only thing that COULD be happening is, CPU overheating ? I have though about that, but its so unlikely, since the symptoms shouldnt be like this when CPU is overheated. And its a server with special cooling buildin, I checked it thursday, the cooling was still working. And the Cabines where my server are located are under special air-cooling also.

Erratic problems like this can be caused by heat damage, hardware damage, or power fluctuations: the symptoms of physical problems like these can easily be random and seemingly unrelated.

I'm curious why executables on your system have trouble terminating; that's a very interesting little problem indeed. Defunct processes -- zombies -- can be caused in a number of ways:

1) A parent spawns a child and forgets to reap it after it's done using it. That doesn't seem likely here, unless your shell is seriously screwed up. Have you checked that out? The configure error that you get every now and then -- that the compiler is broke -- kinda points in this direction, IMO.

2) Threads that do not terminate cleanly become zombies.
I don't think this is a problem -- I don't believe any of the system utilities you're running are multithreaded. Even though each process technically has its own thread, I don't think this is a problem related to your thread library.

3) Hardware problems: most likely bad RAM or hard disk failure. Either one of these (and possibly other causes) can cause excessive latency, causing processes to hang. Check your system logs -- usually these kinds of things show up as odd anomalies.

The first error is harmless, but the second one is, well, odd. Try re-compiling it, and when the configure fails, look in config.log -- usually you'll find telltale stuff in there.

tryhil: Last one is a usual message... at least for me.
Compiling works great here ;-)
Seems to be normal when any special flags are set

see you,

Edit: Whoops, pasted wrong configure output. This is an excerpt from the output of emerge xmms on my system:

Code:

checking for i686-pc-linux-gnu-gcc... i686-pc-linux-gnu-gcc
checking for C compiler default output... a.out
checking whether the C compiler works... yes
checking whether we are cross compiling... no

Code:

root@lothlann etc # cat make.conf.build | egrep 'C.*FLAGS' | egrep -v '^#'
CFLAGS="-march=athlon-tbird -O3 -pipe"
CXXFLAGS="-march=athlon-tbird -O3 -pipe"

make.conf is identical to make.conf.build, and yes, I do see the CFLAGS/CXXFLAGS take effect in the gcc command lines. (I also feel the speed difference, too. :) )

Not sure why that might be "usual", though. That's kinda weird.

Good news is I successfully have mysql/php/apache running :)
I installed a clean gentoo box, almost similar as the one co-located.
Except i changed /etc/make.conf

from:

# Pentium Pro/Pentium II/Pentium III+/Pentium 4/Athlon exclusive (binaries
# will use the P6 instruction set and only run on P6+ systems)
#CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu"
#CFLAGS="-march=i686 -O3 -pipe"
#CXXFLAGS="-march=i686 -O3 -pipe"

to:

# Pentium Pro/Pentium II/Pentium III+/Pentium 4/Athlon optimized (but binaries
# will run on any x86 system)
CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu"
CFLAGS="-mcpu=i686 -O3 -pipe"
CXXFLAGS="-mcpu=i686 -O3 -pipe"

I used emerge -b on the new box, and emerge -k on my server.
And after a whole day working on it, I finally got it working :)

I still dont know WHY my co-located server isnt 100% normal.
I guess it have something to do with the kernel-change.
Havent checked it out though, by changing back the kernel to the old version one I used before. But since everything important is working now, I gonna let it be. I will experiment when I regain my energy, after 4 days messing with my server.

---------------------

I got one problem left though!

root@server bin # emerge

Everytime I do emerge -k package, he will install it, but at the end
it will give me this error.

Happens ALL the time, when I almost finish installing the package, however package will still work. Because this problem occur in post-install-phase, but still, anybody got any idea how to fix this ?

I am using portage-2.0.11

ps: thx for the replies btw, it really helped.

I never touched my compiler, or any other libs, after the final install of the server. And my whole system was successfully compiled from stage 1, so I dont think my compiler is broke or anything. My idea is that somehow the kernel is causing these kind of problems. The only thing I actually changed, was the kernel.

Well my post above, I explained that precompiled packages does works perfectly, doesnt that eliminate this possibility ? I hope so :)

this problem disappear when I reboot, and the problem is caused somehow when I compile something and it get messed up, when I have to ctrl-c for example.

Not necessarily. If you're optimizing for your architecture, it's possible that you could expose hardware problems that would otherwise go unnoticed.
