What do you mean? Have you tried the Gentoo Handbook? One of the best Linux docs ever (IMHO)
I can't really help you with the GTK installer. When I've tried it about 6 months ago it was not working correctly, so I can't recommend it. Some people have had beter luck though. So my advice is: if it works for you (which is not the case), use it. If it doesn't work (which is the case for you), go to the CLI...

The handbook for cli installations is here
Since a lot of the install is already done, you can skip a few steps. Boot the cd and open a xterm (or boot with the nox option to get a console). Mount the partitions, check the networking and chroot. Then you can try emerge --resume. If that fails on app-text/sgml-common again, you will at least have some more info on the error that causes it.

OK - so I tried this:

mount /dev/hda3 /mnt/gentoo
mkdir /mnt/gentoo/boot
mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/gentoo/boot

chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash
env-update
source /etc/profile

... and got the following result

Please try emerging the correct version of automake.

Try emerge =sys-devel/automake-1.4_p6
But iirc sgml-common is wanted if the doc USE flag is set. If that is the case on your system you could try disabling that USE flag for now.

OK, so I mounted the new "failed" installed root, and chroot'ed into it, and tried to run an

Boot the cd and pass the nox option to the kernel then follow the handbook. A manual install is the prefered method.

I'm going to keep documenting this.. in case someone else wants a solution to this in the future... and hopefully I can get there?

I followed the bug (bugs.gentoo.org) ID #148273 and ran
Code:
emerge =automake-1.4_p6

Now I get this

Does anyone know what THIS is all about? Google doesn't tell me much (at least in English)...

When you chrooted, did you mount /proc first?
