Hi I have just bought Gigabyte-GA-965P-DS3 with intel Core Duo.

The DVD drive is recognised by BIOS and I can reach isolinux but then when trying to boot i get the error message
no CDROM drive andI can't go on with installation.
(same with any distro and livecd I tryed)

Any ideas ?? I'm lost

(searched already google and those forums)

This is probably really a question for the install forum but anyway.

OK, you need to give more detail:

1. Is the CD-ROM attached by USB? If so then make sure you are using at least 2005.1 release of Gentoo (2006.0 would always be preferred)
2. Have you tried passing parameters to the kernel? See F2 and F3 for more details at the boot prompt. I'd suggest nofirewire noacpi
3. When you say "no cdrom found" I assume you mean at the point where it is searched for among hda, hdb, hdc, hdd or does it not get that far?

I presume that it actually gives messages showing the loading up of the isolinux kernel. Note that you always need to see the detail when the kernel is loading in this case so we need to see the last messages in detail. Don't forget to issue an F2 if it requires that to see the messages if you are getting the boot graphic.

It's possible that a driver suitable for the P965 Intel chipset needs to be included in the boot kernel but it should be able to use the generic driver to access drives on the IDE interface. There's a thought the DVD drive is not connected to a SCSI by any chance?

This is definitely a hardware problem because this is specific to my motherboard. Seen the same on ubuntu forums.
Even if I'd went trugh a netinstall I'm pretty sure he cd drvie would not be recognised

yes, does not work

Yes it gets that far and then it says it s hda but it can t mount the cd. Fedora CD takes me to choose to insert driver but I don't know which one and if it s possible.

Code:

gentoo all-generic-ide

This worked for my board (Intel DP965LT).
Unfortunately I didn't manage to get networking up and running yet (onboard chip is Intel 82566DC).

Cheers

Code:
gentoo all-generic-ide

Worked on my GA-965P-DS3. I guess Intel dropped IDE support with the ICH8 south bridge, so the interface is handled by a generic SATA/IDE chip (it provides one IDE channel and two SATA channels on my board).

Fine, I guess, but where are the SATA optical drives?

Thanks for this, I was thrown by this after i replaced my MB with the same board (intel DP965LT). One question though. When you build your kernel what is needed to get the 965 to boot? My previous board was a 945, do i just follow this board and use the all-generic-ide on the kernel line :?:

Any help appreciated.

The "other" pata/sata device separate to the ICH8 southbridge on this Gigabyte board is the JMicron JMB 363. Quite a few other i965 boards are using this to provide a pata port for optical drives and a couple of extra sata ports (ABit AB9 series, Asus P5B series, iirc).

Support for it is in the 2.6.18-rcX kernels (might just be the -mm kernel at the moment though), so you'll need e.g. an external USB cd drive or a PCI pata adapter card that the boot cd's kernel supports if you want to boot off CD.

The Intel board mentioned in this thread probably uses a different I/O chipset to the Gigabyte (i.e. not the JMB 363), hence why people with it are having success.

No, adding "all-generic-ide" as a kernel parameter lets the drive be detected without problems. Only difference on my system is that it gets put under /dev/hda while it's on /dev/hde on 2.6.18-rcX.

Hmm. I'm having problems with my GA-965P-DS3. My DVD is showing up as IDE Channel 4 Master. I have 3 SATA hard drives and they're showing as IDE Channel 0, 1, 2 Masters. Everything else is blank. With "gentoo all-generic-ide", I see the following on screen:

Code:
>> Activating udev
>> Making tmpfs for /newroot
>> Attempting to mount CD:- /dev/hda
>> Attempting to mount CD:- /dev/hdc
>> Attempting to mount CD:- /dev/hdc1
>> Attempting to mount CD:- /dev/hdc2
>> Attempting to mount CD:- /dev/hdc3
>> Attempting to mount CD:- /dev/hde
>> Attempting to mount CD:- /dev/hde1
>> Attempting to mount CD:- /dev/hde2
>> Attempting to mount CD:- /dev/hde3
>> Attempting to mount CD:- /dev/hde4
>> Attempting to mount CD:- /dev/hde5
>> Attempting to mount CD:- /dev/hde6
>> Attempting to mount CD:- /dev/hdi
>> No bootable medium found.  Waiting for new devices...
...

After getting into the shell, I find that my DVD is recognized as hdi (cat /proc/sys/dev/cdrom/info). And while booting up, I did see a message about hdi being confused. hdi: cdrm_pc_intr: The drive appears confused (ireason = 0x1)

Did you do something else in the BIOS to get it to boot (ie, what were you settings for Native IDE, Onboard SATA/IDE, etc?) I tried with 2 different DVD drives and also 2 different IDE cables. Thanks!

All I'm able to say is that it works for me on my GA-965P-DS4R. I have the Intel SATA controller set to AHCI mode and the Gigabyte controller to RAID/IDE mode.

Same problem here: 3 SATA discs and CD-ROM drive rcognised as IDE master 4. BTW my CD-ROM is a SATA device. I can boot only from 2006.0 livecd. After installing with a recent stage 3 and a recent portage snapshot GRUB won't find any root filee system (kernel panic, not syncing...), no matter what I feed it in on command line.

I had exactly the same problem and solved it by using lilo. The problem was that with the live cd, my hd was hdi and after booting my new kernel the hd became sda. Booting a custom kernel didn't work, so i went for genkernel, which did give me some problems the first time, but at least gave me a command-prompt that I used to figure out what name my hd got. After that i rebooted the live-cd, changed /etc/lilo.conf into

Code:
boot=/dev/hdi
prompt
timeout=100
default=gentoo

image=/boot/kernel-genkernel-x86-2.6.18-rc4
  label=gentoo
  read-only
  root=/dev/ram0
  append="init=/linuxrc ramdisk=8192 real_root=/dev/sda3 udev"
  initrd=/boot/initramfs-genkernel-x86-2.6.18-rc4

and ran /sbin/lilo, which installed it into the mbr of hdi. after rebooting, lilo found my hd, booted linux and most things worked. .. I still didn't get ALSA up and running and the system still won't run with a normal kernel.

I have the same MOBO DP965LT and everything now working with gentoo-sources 2.6.18

NOTE: In the BIOS under Drives set the Native form to AHCI (MUST DO)

MY SETUP:

SATA0: SATAII 80G p0 (master)
SATA1: SATAII 80G p1 (master)
IDE: DVD-R (master)

Boot the liveCD-2006.1 (Full version) like so:

Code:
gentoo all-generic-ide nox

and gentoo sees the following drives clearly

hda = DVD-R
sda = p0
sdb = p1

Use grub in my opinion:

Code:
#grub:

root (hd0,0)
setup (hd0)

Here are my grub.conf and kernel.configs:

/boot/grub/grub.conf

[NOTE:] all-generic-ide

Code:
default 0
timeout 5
splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz

title=Gentoo Linux ( 2.6.18 )
root (hd0,0)
kernel /bzImage root=/dev/sda2 all-generic-ide video=vesafb:ywrap,mtrr vga=0x31B splash=silent,fadein,theme:livecd-2006.1 quiet CONSOLE=/dev/tty1

/usr/src/linux/.config

[NOTE:] Pentium D :. 64bit system || change to 32 bit for =<Pentium 4

Code:
#
# Automatically generated make config: don't edit
# Linux kernel version: 2.6.18-gentoo

I have set up a system with an Intel DG965RY board, a RocketRAID 2310 card with 4x 320GB drives on it. The boot drive is a WD Raptor 36GB connected to the ICH8 SATA ports. I was able to boot the system and partition the drive with the method described above. I have not been able to get the machine booted up with proper hardware detection with any other livecd so far, perhaps owing to the very recent kernel on the 2006.1 cd. I have not attempted a network install yet as I have to scrounge up a 100Mbit NIC to install in it. I'm going to be away from the machine for a few days, but when I get back to it I'll post my experiences getting it up and running.

Your onbaord NIC will work, I'm sure!

I believe all the 965 based intel board NICs are recognized with 2006.1 FULL VERSION livecd

Intel® 82566DC Gigabit Ethernet Controller = DG965RY
Code:
#modprobe e1000

Then setup net.eth0

PS: If you needed RAID why did you get the DG965RY and not the DG965PZ, just curious?

Hmm...I haven't been able to get the e1000 to work. It won't obtain a network address through dhcp at bootup, and the net-setup script just dies when I select 'wired' from the menu. I even put in a 3com 10/100 card and wasn't able to get it to work. Perhaps this has to do with the ICH8 and the kernel on the livecd. I am currently compiling the 2.6.18 gentoo kernel and we'll see what happens. The reason that I went with the RY instead of the PZ because the PZ is a picoBTX form factor and I already had an ATX case ready to use.

I set up my Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 machine as follows:

Boot using the Gentoo 2006.1 install CD for amd64, specifying the options "all-generic-ide" and "irqpoll" on the kernel boot line. (My CD/DVD is also SATA) This allowed all SATA and IDE devices to be seen, but the SATA HDs were mapped as hda and hde. The Ethernet controller uses the sky2 drivers.

Follow the install procedure as standard using the gentoo-sources 2.6.18 kernel. Make sure you build it with SATA support, SCSI cdrom (if you need a SATA CD/DVD device), support for the Intel ICH chipsets, other IDE controllers (JMicron), yukon sky2 driver for Ethernet and Intel HD audio for sound.

Set up fstab for device sda as your HD rather than hda which you got using the boot options above. Set up grub for hd0. Now the system should boot.

I configured raid after getting it to boot as described, then continued setting up X etc.

Pretty mch everything works: SATA and IDE (JMicron) work, my SATA CD/DVD is fine. Ethernet no problem (sky2 driver) and sound works.

I can't get any sense from lm_sensors and I have not yet been able to get my wacom tablet to work with kernel 2.6.18, bt that is not the motherboard's fault.

Cheers
David.

I have a Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3, and of course i'd like to use the 2.6.18 kernel but it seems it only emerge gentoo sources 2.6.17-r8, this way i don't have suport for my hardware... what can i do?

Code:
# echo sys-kernel/gentoo-sources ~arch >> /etc/portage/package.keywords

Replace 'arch' with whatever architecture you're running on, i.e. x86 or amd64.

I emerged the 2.6.18 kernel but I can't find the option for JMicron IDE support in menuconfig. Is there a patch I'm missing or is support not availible in gentoo-sources? I did find the option in mm-sources, but I can't build nvidia-drivers against them.

I was emerging the new sources and i got this error
Code:
 * Applying 4405_alpha-sysctl-uac.patch (-p0+) ...                        [ ok ]touch: setting times of `/var/tmp/portage/gentoo-sources-2.6.18/.unpacked': Function not implemented

  ebuild.sh, line 712:   Called die

!!! IO Failure -- Failed 'touch .unpacked' in /var/tmp/portage/gentoo-sources-2.6.18
!!! If you need support, post the topmost build error, and the call stack if relevant.

any ideas?

It seems like a permissions error, but you must've been emerging as root, so I guess not. Is your portage up to date?

i chrooted into the system because the old gentoo-sources didn't suport the gigabyte... i think i'm the root user... and i cant emerge portage because it gives the same error...

There is no options explicitly for the JMicron chipset, the drivers seem to be part of the enhanced IDE support. The only options I've configured for IDE are:
Enhanced IDE/MFM/RLL disk/cdrom/tape/floppy spport
Include IDE/ATA-2 DISK support
generic/default IDE chipset support
Generic PCI bus master DMA support
PCI IDE chipset support
Intel PIIxn chipsets support

and of course the various DMA cdrom and other options. My log file indicates that the JMicron 363 chip is being detected and enabled by the E-IDE driver (alpha2).
Code:
Oct  9 00:10:58 namazeze Uniform Multi-Platform E-IDE driver Revision: 7.00alpha2
Oct  9 00:10:58 namazeze ide: Assuming 33MHz system bus speed for PIO modes; override with idebus=xx
Oct  9 00:10:58 namazeze JMB363: IDE controller at PCI slot 0000:03:00.1
Oct  9 00:10:58 namazeze ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:03:00.1[B] -> GSI 16 (level, low) -> IRQ 169
Oct  9 00:10:58 namazeze JMB363: chipset revision 2
Oct  9 00:10:58 namazeze JMB363: 100% native mode on irq 169

I have the same motherboard gigabyte DS3. I am using linux-2.6.18-emission1. I got the cdrom working with this kernel but I need to pass boot parameter "irqpoll" in grub. The other problem is the ethernet driver sky2, it randomly hard freezes my system and I have to hard reset. This seems to be fixed in 2.6.19-rc5 and above which I will test out soon. PM me if you want my .config for the kernel.
