Hi, I thought I'd like to post something about the support that the Gentoo community offers noobs like myself.
For many newbies Linux is not the easiest OS to learn, and using a source based distro can make things even trickier. Furthurmore, in some distros and OSes either a lack of followers or a lack of a support culture makes help a lot harder to find. So I was pleasantly suprised to find out just what a great help this forum and #gentoo on irc are. The Gentoo elite seem to find time for us newbies and our inane questions; the support alone has made an avid Gentoo fan.
So this begs the question: what is it about Gentoo that makes it's users so helpful?

i guess that is because most of the folks hanging around here still know how it feels to get RTFM as an answer - and at least for me it is a way to support the community with my limited abilities (not to mention its a way not to get bored on a sunday afternoon )

yeah i have to agree, we've all been through the elitist mentalities with other distros as well as support communities, and because we value gentoo's superiority in that respect, we all want to do whatever we can to strengthen that superiority

I think it is the forum colors, I love the light, easy-going look.
And besides, Gentoo keeps us all happy(with new presents every day) so how on earth could we get nasty?

Really nice avatar...
And yes, I've also found the Gentoo forums to contain some of the most friendly and helpful Linux users - I'm guesing this has something to do with the tight nit community that Gentoo tends to create, also these forums help alot, I haven't seen many distros with a similar setup of engaged people.
From this forum has come many of the things that makes Gentoo great - the GWN, user ebuilds for testing, interesting ideas towards future development, etc.
I really think that the community is what makes Gentoo so special - and the low treshold for entry into development certainly helps alot, almost anyone can create an ebuild, so we have a wide selection of software and there's room for everyones suggestions. This also helps the n00bs gain insight and knowledge, thus giving the feeling that you actually progress with Gentoo, where as Mandrake, etc. might work as it's suppose to and you don't really know why. So feeling that one is getting better continueously is encouraging, having used many Linux distros in the past, including LFS - this is by far the most rewarding aspect of Gentoo for me personally (of course - the "YOU ROCK" messages when you've helped someone ain't bad at all either).
But really what makes the forums such a nice place is that people are very polite, I've seldomly seen very angry posts complaining about bugs, so instead of flaming back people actually help out.

This is my humble theory: to bear hours and hours of compilation one has to be very patient. This leads to a selection that allows only the most patient Gentoo wannabe-users to reach the end of the tunnel.

When I first got here as quite the little n00b that I was, people treated me and other n00bs very well although some of us almost deserved a RTFM right in the face. Almost a year later and a lot more experienced, I feel that I should extend that same courtesy to all the new people here. So they'll feel just a s welcomed as I did back then.

Glad found this thread as I have lacked a reason to post up until now as every question i have managed to raise has been answered in these forums without me coming across RTFM in reply to every question.
As someone who is a 'user' of linux and no-way a programmer or even close to that term, and who has a few years of SuSE, Redhat and Mandrake. Installing gentoo has been a difficult, 10 day experience (i have to sleep and work) that has been enjoyable and worthwhile. Due in no small part to these forums.
One day I still hope to reach my goal of helping someone in return.

Hey, I'm a sucker for long hair and pretty eyes - so even if that in all likelihood ain't Brandy (remember the poll we have ages ago - the chances of a member being an actual 3D girl is in the area of 1 to 1000) it's still a very nice picture. |

I dunno, perhaps it's that wonderful feeling of freedom from nagging package managers like RPM
But really, I believe one gets a greater sense of satisfaction from installing a source-based distro than a more mainstream distro like Red Hat. The install process makes you feel like you really accomplished something, that you are now one of the truly '1337'. This tends to put people in better moods.
Some people will eventually get more scornful after some time, but by then they have probably moved on to harsher battlegrounds like Slashdot, USENET, OS News, or writing letters to the editor of their local newspapers

lol. Yeah, in reality I'm a 50 year old obese truck-driver called Stan. 
That's the shame about computers - far too much testosterone for us girls to be taken seriously.

The reasons. Besides, we're not not taking you seriously. If you can lay claim to that pretty picture, more power to you. There's a fair number of good lookin' folks in the geek community, so it shouldn't be a surprise. Welcome to the forums.

This is exactly what i thought, even i'm not as l33t as *Levi*...
However, helping the newbies now will help us in the future, since when they know enough to stand on their own legs we can use their new fresh-minded experience and expand our minds a bit more..

Sorry didn't mean to offend you - I've been burned plenty of times by assuming that the nick was an indicator of the persons sex.. Strangely even after all my time here some members still think I'm female, so I guess it evens out the score.
And no I was not just being nice because of the avatar.. anyone who's polite and respectful deserves the same treatment. Although I have a bad habit of hitting on girls, I really should stop that but I can't help it, trust me.
