I have searched for solutions but found none. My problem is that when I type startx it seems to load but then I am left with a terminal with this error message:
Code:

Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/local/, removing from list!xterm: Error 32, errno 2: No such file or directory
Reason: get_pty: not enough ptys
login: Error 32, errno 2: No such file or directory
Reason: get_pty: not enough ptys

waiting for X server to shut down X connection to :0.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown).

Here is my Xorg.0.log:

Code:

Are you using a custom kernel, one that you configured and compiled yourself?

I asked because I remembered a setting in the kernel for ptys that I thought you might need to enable, but when I just looked up the setting I found that in fact it has to do with serial drivers. I doubt that's what's needed here.

Sorry. That was pretty much my one idea, and I don't think it's much help to you.

It could be an xterm problem - I googled for this and it always seemed to be an error caused by xterm.

You may notice your error message:
Code:

xterm: Error 32, errno 2: No such file or directory
Reason: get_pty: not enough ptys
login: Error 32, errno 2: No such file or directory
Reason: get_pty: not enough ptys

It's something related to things like udev, /etc/fstab ... just to point you to the right direction, please google yourself.

Okay, it seems I need to have devpty mounted to /dev/pty.

Is this line in fstab correct for mounting as such:

Code:
devpts                  /dev/pts        auto            defaults        0 0

had the same error, i just did enable following options in kernel config /usr/src/linux/.config and compiled the kernel again, rebooted and voila ... ;)
Code:
CONFIG_UNIX98_PTYS=y
CONFIG_LEGACY_PTYS=y

the error has nothing to do with settings in FSTAB  :!:

I think you should not enable legacy unless there is some old piece of software that requires this. It has drawbacks and poses security risk (as stated in kernel help)

I have this line in /etc/fstab for mounting devpts:
Code:

devpts /dev/pts devpts noatime,nodiratime,gid=5,mode=600 0 0

The nodiratime mount option may not be needed with noatime.
(I did not know one way or the other, but I could see no need for
atime updates on the devpts pseudo filesystem, so I added it.)
"man mount" and search for "devpts".

The explanation of the "newinstance" mount option in that devpts
section in the mount man page notes that the kernel's
CONFIG_DEVPTS_MULTIPLE_INSTANCES must be enabled to use it.

The fstab man page explains the different fields in /etc/fstab entries,
but the 4th field contains mount options that are explained in the mount
man page.

There are sometimes man pages for traditional configuration files
in /etc with the same name as that config file (instead of having to
dig through the documentation of some program or spend hours
searching the www for the information). fstab and inittab are such files.
