hi, i'm trying to get gentoo installed
each time i'm trying to emerge rsync, at some point or another it hangs and i have to do a hard reset
after some searching on the forum, i tried it with wget (downloading a portage snapshot), sometimes i can start the download (at about 6 k/s - which is incredibly slow, because on my other boxes i get 150 k/s on the same file), but after some time (a few MB), the program will hang; after closing it with ctrl-c, it won't start the download at all (but i can still ping)

i have a abit AT7 mobo, with a realtek 8139 chipset onboard (using the 8139too driver); my hd's are in raid (using ataraid and hptraid; hpt374 controller) and everything else until the point of emerge rsync (or wget ...) works perfectly...

can anybody help me with this??? (pretty please...)

bizzare

I would try another nic, another 8139 would do.

failing that, start from scratch again.. ?

I assume you can't look at any logs ?

where can i find the relevant logfiles?

btw: it's already the fourth time i'm starting from scratch...

maybe useful info: i'm connecting through a router, which is also the gateway and dns-server, all settings should be ok (cause i can start downloading...), and if i use the same cable with an other box, it works just fine...

i will try it out with another 8139 i have lying around (from scratch)
will let you know how it went

nope, not the fault of the firewall
wget keeps giving me:
Code:
Too much work at interrupt, IntrStatus=0x0040

and this only after downloading about 2-3% (too slow)

Hmmm... that's a strange one. Might be a problem with your NIC or any number of other things.

This is a long shot, as it depends on a number of things, but try moving your NIC to a different slot.

apparantly there's something wrong whith the cable between my boxes on the thirth floor, and the router on the first: only with a pure 10 Mb card you can get a decent connection (not even with a 100 configured on 10 !?!)

solution: i bridged one of my old boxes, and routed my new box through it

and now everything works (the ethernet that is, gentoo is still giving me crap... :-) )
