I think a common gripe is that there isn't enough exposure of our wonderful (but slightly confused) mascot, Larry the Gentoo cow. He's on the about page, but that's it. So I thought a good thing to do would be to set him as a bootup logo, in the place where Tux normally goes.

I've figured out how to do it (my first ever kernel hack - yay!) and posted the method here:

http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Linux_Logo_Hack#Do_it_Right

I hope you'll agree that it's all done very much by the book.

Now what I'd really love is for this to be included in the gentoo-sources patchset. I've successfully used it, it's a dead simple hack, and if it was automated by the ebuild all the end-user would see would be an extra option in the "Logo configuration" section of menuconfig saying something like "Larry the cow". They'd still have the choice to ignore it and keep Tux, if that's what they wanted.

I've stuck the logo I'm using (51kb) up on my webspace to get you started - and it's already in kernel-friendly PPM format, to boot. [See what I did there? XD ] I'd be up for doing more logos though if I hear any popular suggestions. Maybe just Larry's head, or possibly even a GIMPulated combination - Tux trying to hang onto a raging rodeo-style Larry?

I don't want to submit a bug report asking for it straight away, so I'm posting here to test the water - do enough of the *really* important people - the Gentoo users - think that this'd be a good idea?

Well, do ya? Huh? :D

I'm afraid this will start the entire "lary is sooooo lame" discussion again...
Nevertheless, I'm a big supporter of Larry and the idea :D

You mean this thread? That's where I got the idea from in the first place! :D I think in the end there were a few people who disliked Larry (most seemingly for the reason "he's transexual and that makes me feel uncomfortable") but an overwhelming majority turned out in his favour.

I already asked this same question in that thread by the way, but it got buried halfway down page 13 and I don't think anybody saw it...

Still, 19:2 for inclusion - I'm liking that ratio!

I don't use any startup logos, having a nice animated GRUB and splash screen is enough for me.

Although I would never use it, to each his own.

How did you animate Grub? Did you use some SuSE version or something?

Ahh. So it was from the SuSE version. That was one of the little things that I liked about SuSE.

Me too.
It gives GRUB more polished/professional look and helps when showing the OS off, trying to led someone over from the darkside.
(Average Windows user sees a text dialog and freaks out thinking that is what Linux is about. (That and misleading/outdated articles on the Internet.))

I also think that YAST is by far the best installation tool I have ever used for any OS. I was impressed by it when I installed SuSE 6.1 back in the day, and it has only become better since then. Since the sources are available, I wonder why more distributions (like Gentoo) don't use it as the starting point for their own installer? After all, the GLI in 2006.0 was pretty much a fiasco. It might be in 2006.1 too, but after what happened when I tested it in the last release, I won't be doing so again.

Argh, this thread is going all off-topic.

Does anybody have any great ideas for Gentoo-related bootup logos? Should I file a bug report sooner rather than later, or never at all? Who's best to contact to ask about getting this included?

/mild sarcasm Did you even read the forums shortly after it was released?

I know that I'm not the only once who lost all my non-Gentoo partitions. Yes, many people used it without incident. Most of those gave it an entire drive to use for the install. Still, there were a great many posts of problems with the GLI after its introduction. Once it had wiped all my partitions I figured "What the Hell, my backups are only a month old.", and rebooted the cd and let it have the whole drive. It managed to get part of the base system installed that time, but not grub. The next attempt got me a bootable console system, but not the Gnome environment I asked for. (I don't use Gnome, I just did that to test the installer) I ended up just wiping the drive in disgust and doing a manual stage3 install. I still see new posts about problems with it. Don't get me wrong. I think that having an installer is a good idea. Properly executed, it would cut way down on the noobish errors we see in the Installing Gentoo forum every day. (mostly not reading and following directions) I just wish that the beta nature of the installer had been made more apparent to the average user. I knew that it was a beta. I was only testing it so that I could provide informed answers to questions in the Installing Gentoo forum. In the ten or so years I've been using Linux, it is the first time that I've had an installer destroy partitions that I told it not to touch. Hmm. From the length of this diatribe, I guess it still annoys me. Thanks for listening.

EDIT: To Napalm Llama, sorry about going off-topic. I think that having a Larry Logo is a good idea. After all, we used to have one in the kernel.

I'm in favor of as much Larry as possible. A bug report is a good idea.

Hehehe - you're in luck, as I don't have anywhere near enough drawing/GIMP talent to pull it off :)

If I file a bug report, do all you Larry-supporters think you could back me up if the Genpatches team are skeptical about it?

I'm all for a Larry logo. It'll be something different from the usual Tux at least. :)

Make a version where there's Tux on one corner and Larry in other.

I'm not sure if I'd use one. It must be very very easily enabled feature. Still I try not to boot the pc so it wont have much value to me even if it would be easy to setup.

Personally, I am still a Tux fan. ;)

I'm sure a lot of people would like this, though.

I am all for this, especially since it doesn't force the new boot logo on anyone. Have you filed a bug to have this included in the gentoo patchset? That's the first step to getting it included.

Also, is there a possibility of getting a tux and larry icon at the same time on a multi-proc system? :-P

That sounds like a great idea, but sadly I bought my current system just before multicore CPUs became commonplace, so I wouldn't be able to test it (and given that I don't know C, I'd be almost certain not to get it right first time). If anyone can write the code and has one of these machines to test it on, then by all means add a section to the wiki and post back here!

In the meantime, have another logo:
http://ccgi.yellowmackerel.co.uk/img.php?forum/logo_tuxlarry.png

Unfortunately, I seem to have deleted the XCF. I know it's not that great, but I'm still open to suggestions!
