I was wondering why amarok was built without musicbrainz support so I had a look at the ebuild:

Why are there hard-coded --without's?

I don't know for sure, but I hacked together an ebuild that enabled musicbraiz support. Unfortunately amarok wasn't super stable as a result. Anytime you clicked to fill in tags with musicbrainz it had a tendency to lock up. That being said, it could have just been the version of tunepimp I was using with it.

It's probably just an unstable feature so they disable it by default.

musicbrainz is diabled because of security and API imcompatibility issues of tunepimp.

The reason is given in the ChangeLog, [bug=140184]Bug #140184[/bug] and [glsa=200607-11]GLSA 200607-11[/glsa].

A shame really, MB is one of the major features of amarok...

True. I hope we see an in amarok replacement eventually.
For now I also re-enabled the function in my portage overlay of amarok and I'll take the security risk.
(At least until I get more comfortable with musicbrainz tagger which seems to run perfect until Crossover Office.)

I'm not sure why gentoo took the masking plus tagged for removal route since there's patches that fix the security issue. It seems to have just version bumped for the fix on most other distros.

Oh well, just another layer of bubble wrap around us I guess.

Musicbrainz Tagger works perfectly under normal WINE too.
