But when I logged in and went there I had no messages

That being a poll question, I vote my doubt: I guess it to be uncommon, though I have several times been notified of posts which had been deleted prior to my checking the presumably containing topic.

Notification emails go out immediately, but people can still edit/delete sent personal messages if the message was not yet read by you.
