I have an Ultrasparc IIi box running Solaris 9. The reason that I have this is so that, as a web applications developer, I can test things out on Solaris as well as Linux.

As I don't do that much testing of this type, this machine sits in the corner as a backup machine, rsync'ing my critical directories four times a day.

This machine isn't what I'd call fast. But then again, I have put Gentoo on "not fast" x86 boxes, and performance (over SuSE) has improved significantly.

As I can run Solaris on an x86 machine (I have an old Duron box spare), I was wondering whether it would be worth my while putting Gentoo on the Sparc box to give me a whizzy 64 bit machine to play with?

Honestly, if you have a 64 bit SPARC but Solaris 10 on it (Solaris 10 is only available 64 bit for Sparc, but is available 32 and 64 bit for x86/x86_64). It's open source and very fast, without all the compile time of gentoo. Solaris 10 is great, the Sun Java Desktop is really gnome. However, you won't get some of the premium patches without paying. However, there is an open solaris site that has some great stuff. I run Solaris 10 on an old (relatively speaking) SunFire v60x (yes, Sun's brief affair with Intel, she's dual Socket 478 Xeon @2.8GHz a CPU) and it rocks.

Just my two cents. Though you can never go wrong with Gentoo.

Sadly, Solaris 10 does not support my hardware - it took me half a day of wondering why the damn thing wouldn't install before I discovered this...

...and forever watching eBay for a nice Sun Enterprise server - preferably 4 cpus or more, and at least a couple of gigs of RAM, for about a hundred (Aussie) bucks. I wish...

Our Production DBs run on a pair of v440s in the large config.
The internal disks are configured with one as a boot, one as a nightly copy, one as a weekly copy, and one as a monthly copy.
The DBs run from veritas controlled StorageTek 3320s in the medium config.
They're nice machines, and handle an incredible load without missing a beat.

Having my life to live over again I would've gotten FC cards, and an apple XSERVE-RAID loaded out to 7000GB and cache batterys for each machine.
RAID5 on both sides, and Veritas mirrororing the arrays. Could have had them both with applecare for the same price I paid for a single sun array.
