This happened only recently. I have successfully emerged kde & gnome & mozilla b4.
GNOME was quite some time ago, until i accidentally deleted the contents of /bin and reinstalled the whole distro.
Then I installed KDE, found it too slow for its own good, and decided to switch to GNOME.
Now, the computer hangs randomly during GNOME compilation, and sometimes (actually the first few times) creates a "kernel bug" with hex output, something about kreiserfsd not working.
I rebooted into the CD and did reiserfsck --fix-fixable. It fixed the inconsistancies (there _are_ inconsistancies), but the random crashes continued.
Whenever it crashed, the "disk busy" LED on the box remains orange/lit-up (busy disk writing?), and when I check the compile status, it _should_ be writing files onto the disk. e.g. it crashed while generating ld.so.cache and i had to set LD_LIBRARY_PATH to run python & env-update. Then the keyboard also locks up around five seconds after the compiling TTY outputs no new message.
I am not going to attempt GNOME compile for now. In the meantime, I am going to backup my home directory onto my Windows/VFAT partition in case the ReiserFS partition gets out of hand.
But I hope to get at least an explanation. |
