Hello,

I'm currently trying to netboot my indy, but all I get is this:

Code:

>> printenv
AutoLoad=Yes
TimeZone=PST8PDT
ConsoleWarning=PASSWD JUMPER MISSING--forced to g.
console=g
diskless=0
dbaud=9600
volume=80
sgilogo=y
autopower=y
eaddr=08:00:69:08:4b:76
cpufreq=175
SystemPartition=scsi(0)disk(1)rdisk(0)partition(8)
OSLoadPartition=scsi(0)disk(1)rdisk(0)partition(0)
OSLoadFilename=/unix
OSLoader=sash
NoAutoLoad=CONSOLE OPEN FAILED.
ConsoleOut=serial(0)
ConsoleIn=serial(0)
>> bootp(): root=/dev/ram0
Setting $netaddr to 192.168.0.6 (from server )
Unable to execute bootp():
>> printenv
AutoLoad=Yes
TimeZone=PST8PDT
ConsoleWarning=PASSWD JUMPER MISSING--forced to g.
console=g
diskless=0
dbaud=9600
volume=80
sgilogo=y
autopower=y
eaddr=08:00:69:08:4b:76
cpufreq=175
SystemPartition=scsi(0)disk(1)rdisk(0)partition(8)
OSLoadPartition=scsi(0)disk(1)rdisk(0)partition(0)
OSLoadFilename=/unix
OSLoader=sash
NoAutoLoad=CONSOLE OPEN FAILED.
ConsoleOut=serial(0)
ConsoleIn=serial(0)
netaddr=192.168.0.6
dlserver=192.168.0.1
>>

So this is the setup:

- 192.168.0.1 -> Cisco C800 series router with DHCP server
- 192.168.0.2 -> tftp server with boot image
- 192.168.0.6 -> indy

As you can see dlserver is not getting set correctly. it should be 192.168.0.2 instead of 192.168.0.1. Unfortunatly I think the DHCP server is being configured correctly:

Code:

ip dhcp pool dhcp-pool
   network 192.168.0.0 255.255.255.0
   domain-name lan
   dns-server 217.237.149.161 217.237.150.97
   default-router 192.168.0.1
   lease infinite
!
ip dhcp pool special-pool
   host 192.168.0.6 255.255.255.0
   hardware-address 0800.6908.4b76
   bootfile gentoo-r4k.img
   next-server 192.168.0.2
   domain-name lan
   dns-server 217.237.149.161 217.237.150.97
   default-router 192.168.0.1
   client-name indy
   lease infinite
!

Something I am doing wrong?

Regards,

Markus

You may want to try netbooting from a windows box instead. Check my post at this thread.

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-242518-start-25.html

The server allows you to control a lot of things like anticipation window and options negotiation. Never tried it on an Indy but it sure worked on my O2.

Clearly the Indy is getting the IP address, but the TFTP server isn't being set correctly.

It's worth noting, the SGI PROM actually uses BOOTP, not DHCP. The guide recommends ISC's DHCPd, since it provides both the DHCP and BOOTP server functions in one package... you'll need to check that Cisco IOS also supports this functionality.

ok. I tried ISC's DHCP and my Indy got the image after about 5 tries (the other ones died while downloading).

unfortunatly I'm getting a Oops while linux is loading:

Is my machine broken?

What spec is this Indy? I can see it's possibly an R4x00, and has 160MB RAM, but what does hinv in the PROM say? Some of the R4x00 machines are particularly picky when it comes to Linux -- the R4600 especially so.

You might want to try the images at http://dev.gentoo.org/~kumba/mips/netboot/testing/ and see if that works. Failing that, join #gentoo-mips and we'll see where we go from there.

too bad.. this was triggert by the 128 MB extra ram I bought on ebay :?

let's do an install with 32 mb of ram and see how far I get 8)

EDIT: seems like the rams don't like each other. having only the new ram (128MB) in the machine and it still boots file :-)

The rams don't like eachother... Heh... why do I picture two sheep having a biff in the paddock? ;-)

But yeah, dodgy RAM will cause all sorts of issues, and unfortunately there's no memtest86 equivalent for MIPS (memtestmips? Hrmm... now there's an idea...). I asked about the specs, as I say, the R4600 has all sorts of issues with Linux 2.6 (I know... I own one). The R4400 though runs fine, and is a better chip than the R4600. :-)
