No, Gentoo is about choice. Given the choice, most people would choose to drop useless stuff, so that's a useful side-affect.
Howver, I choose to keep Larry. You can't take that away from me! _________________ Ryzen 5600x; Asus TUF Gaming B550-Plus; Geforce 1660 Super

So I took some advice and added
Then of course . . .
emerge --update --newuse --deep world
and get this . . .
Code: | error: command 'x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-gcc' failed with exit status 1
!!! ERROR: dev-gentoo/LarryTheTransexual-0.1
Call stack:
ebuild.sh, line 1521: Larry pWn3$ ur pu73r
ebuild.sh, line 924: You have caught the ghey
ebuild.sh, line 1233: Cowpies have been added to kernel.
distutils.eclass, line 35: Called die, Larry Lives
!!! compilation failed
!!! If you need support, post the topmost build error, and the call stack if relevant. |

Thats my point,
Larry belongs in a barn not in my riceburner puter.
A drunk'n party cow has no place in a souped up Gentoo box. _________________ For Sale: Parachute. Only used once, never opened, small stain. |

I agree with the original poster. A cow is very lame, we need more distros with dragons, birds of prey, phoenixes, etc... _________________ iMac G4 1GHz :: q6600 //2x 500GB//2GB RAM//8600GT//Gentoo :: MacBook Pro//2.53GHz |

I think the mascott should be a fork. nothing says "i'm gonna poke you" like a fork.
seriously though, I have seen Larry about 2 times in all my gentoo life. ! of those times was from a link about pointing to the about gentoo page. |

I never unserstood why distro named after a breed of penguins doesnt use them for its mascot. I mean Fedora's mascot is... err a fedora hat.
With that in mind Larry is pretty cool. _________________ Child - Noun. Pronunciation Key: (chld)

Why do we have to have a steam-blowing, pissed off, testosterone powered mascot?
Isn't Gentoo a modern thinking distro? Where we are all au fait with the notion of a transgender mascot and/or man-boobs on such?
But really, what the heck DOES Larry, or Lary the mail cow (sic.), have to do with the idea of a beautiful Pygoscelis papua (Gentoo).
I think Fedora/RH have a long history (ref: Lechium), which is nice, but (ref: shickapooka800) really, Larry only does enter the history via a link "about Gentoo" page when you are busy trying to find the dang handbook. Larry is about as useful as the aforementioned "mamory glands on a bull".
Can we get a little more relevance into Larry? Can we performance modify him? Maybe a spoiler and mag-wheels might help out, perhaps emerge him with specific USE and CFLAGS to squeeze out that undetectable speed boost, *cough* placebo *cough* effect, that we are so infamous for.
Can we entice Daniel Robbins to make a final comment on such?..
Maybe I should devote my resources to development rather than these goings-on, hmm...

I was speaking of your first post, and specifically talk of a BULL (being an XY version of a cow), and a pissed-off bull at that, these things have sometimes been associated with testosterone, is all.
I think it is great that we are all talking about what really is a "cow". Code: | emerge gentoo-philosophy |
What makes a cow, really a cow? This is udderly rediculous. |

I couldn't get that one to compile, but I figured it out, and now I have a patch for the ebuild...
Code: | ...
DEPEND="${DEPEND}
virtual/gentoo-corny-humor
sys-libs/libbadpun2"
...
|

What if we play a game: How many mascots can be packed into one post and then try to break that record.
Gentooers, ubiquitous in adding more mascots. Gentoo: the one known for watery decisions on even their mascot, why not a mascot for "arch" and "~arch", ideas?
With the funky "G"-logo, Larry, Barry (not iconic I guess), Tux (at large), that cool Gentoo-esque madcapped looking version of a penguin on the homepage posts, that UFO, and our namesake Gentoo, lets add this Gentoo-strapped-to-a-rocket version (which is actually a good version and makes sense considering the namesake) to the list.
Maybe Larry should have some specifications drawn up? ?
Then submit it for some generic Linux standard so at least all the other type of package management users know how to best taunt Gentooers for 'Ricer'-ness |

Is there a large version of that crazy frontpage penguin? I want to incorporate it into a wallpaper. (Yes, I know it's been done before, but MEH.)
