Hello, I'm rather new to Gentoo. I have a friend who syncs every other day and yet another who syncs every month. How often should one sync?

Thanks.

It depends on what updates you've read about and need, or what updates you want to check out. Sometimes when I'm installing a system and haven't got early kinks worked out and a sync fails, I'll sync or metadata a few times a day until I get it completely done. The longest I've gone without a sync is about 3 months.

Syncing is just part of the daily routine, sometimes I sync more then one time a day.

Please try to limit yourself to once or twice per day, as any more could potentially put much unneeded load on the servers. Thanks.

Why do people feel the need to sync everyday? It just causes unnecessary strain on the servers. No one should have to sync more than once a week and even then that is too many syncs for the average user. Just because there is an update in portage to software you have installed does not mean you have to update it.

I sync portage and layman overlays and update world once per week. In times of intense development activity I sync and update twice per week.

It varies from daily to monthly - depending on what I am doing and my available free time

I should add that, when I was still using gentoo, I synced and updated about every weekend or so. Though, it was sometimes a bit more often for security updates and things of that nature.

Sync everyday? No way!
If you're happy with your system and you're not an update-geek, just sync one a week. This will make sure you get the most recent security updates in time and don't make sync-servers uselessly busy :D

Yes it does, I so totally does.... I have the rss feeds for x86 testing and stable added to akregator, so I tend to only sync when I see that a package I use has been updated. Sometimes this is once a day, others its once a week. I try to avoid more than one per day, unless i am troubleshooting a nasty issue, which does not happen that often.

I only sync before I install new packages or when I feel the need to update my system, which due to time restraints is no more than once every other week!

I usually do it at least once or twice a week, when I'm home and bored (like over the summer, yay college), I'll do it once a day because I've got nothing better to do.

On some machines I don't sync for months, and then get burned trying to update a bajillion packages in which half of them have bugs or don't work. Sucks when that happens.

I dont use Gentoo anymore, but I "sync" my pkgsrc tree about once or twice a fortnight to see whats new. If I find it interesting I install the update. GUI related stuff I update about once in 4 months.

I usually sync probably about twice a week... but I've lived without a sync for a month or so before.

I usually just check packages.gentoo.org daily or so and see if there's anything interesting I want to update. So I usually end up syncing maybe 3 times a week.

Yeah...

Since I'm at home, my mom bugs me about it...but I'm home for less than eight more weeks, and I deem that clearly not enough time to bother with anything serious, so I'll just play with Gentoo for the summer and hope there's nice freshmen girls back up at school... 8)
