Rice eating Penguin? This is not red-flag linux were talking about here, it's Gentoo. I think we deserve better.
And we are trying to stay away from Larry, that's why were coming up with suggestions to get rid of him, so we don't have to be around him.
Cows (transexual or not) are slow, and smell. Gentoo linux is neither. We have a crappy mascott. _________________ For Sale: Parachute. Only used once, never opened, small stain. |

Personally, if we want to stick with something cute (along the lines of a cow and/or penguin) I'd suggest a ferret. Ferrets are amazing cute, and pretty damned cool.
If you want something that would command more respect, I nominate a lion mascot.
Thoughts, suggestions? |
What do people think of these suggestions? |

Why not? It's fun and silly and makes me giggle when I think about it. Look, Gentoo is different from other distros so we shuld have a "Different" mascot. Besides, there are enough devs that love Larry that he will NEVER be dropped as our mascot. _________________ Gentoo: it's like wiping your ass with silk. |

Gentoo has a rep for only being popular with ricers and script-kiddies.
I think the mascot doesn't do much to improve the image of Gentoo users. _________________ Nihilism makes me smile. |

But I fail to see how 'transsexual Larry' would contribute to that ricer image and otoh having a kewl mascot wouldn't change that image either. |

A distro that has a large community receives better support and grows stronger because of it. The larger the base, the stronger the likelihood that people give back.

We have the best - let me repeat that - we have the BEST community support forum of any other distribution. Hands down. We even get windows people coming here and asking tech support questions. I don't think Larry the Transexual Cow has been a problem for us. After all, you don't like him but you're still here aren't you? _________________ Gentoo: it's like wiping your ass with silk. |

I think the cow and the purple theme suck but the forums are great and you can generally find an answer or at least confirmation that you aren't the only poor bastard with a specific problem so I guess they can stay. _________________ Ware wa mutekinari.

Though I've already registered my dislike of Larry, I will say that he doesn't show up very often. If he's the Gentoo mascot, he's a pretty shy one. The metallic "G" -- which makes me think of Pacman, which makes me think of script-kiddies for sure, but that's the subject of another rant -- is really the only distro trademark that I run across very often.
So, as long as Larry agrees to remain in the pasture, I say let him live. _________________ This space available! |

Maybe we should give Larry bigger horns and a large piercing in his nose...
I've seen it with other cows... it looks cool _________________ Smaug: Sun Netra T1 105, UltraSPARC-IIi 440MHz, 512MB, 2*36GB 10kRPM; 2 Sun Netra D130: 6*36GB 10kRPM, swraid 0

There is no logo for apache.org, java.sun.com, apple.com, microsoft.com, netscape.com.
And what about the publishing domain? Penguin.com - no logo! |
Yes, there are logos:
Code: |
apache.org feather
java.sun.com coffee cup
apple.com a biten apple
microsoft.com word "Microsoft" in bold italics
netscape.com letter "N"
penguin.com penguin (?) in an orange oval

These symbols ARE logos of their respective owners.
(RTFWP - read the fine web page(s)?)
But Larry should stay!
I remember him with 2004.x LiveCDs, but in 2005.* he disappeared. Too bad.
If there's no cow on the LiveCD, then this mascot is sooo hidden that it could be dead as well.
I'd say "metal-G" for [official] Gentoo logo.
And for Larry - keep it but make his presence more visible. If not, drop it. (sorry, Larry!) _________________ My blog: In search for ultimate programming language |

I don't like Larry at all. The distro is named after a penguin, so it makes perfect sense that the mascot should be a penguin too.
And what's the UFO there for? That should be removed even sooner than the cow. |
