I have a SS20 I would like to ressurect (It currently has a very old version of RedHat). The "new" 2005.0 experimental that is talked about in the sticky note don'e seem to exist anymore. I was able to find a copy of the 2004.1 in a mirror so I was wondering, will this allow me to get an OK modern install?
Also I have 2 sparc 2's, 2 sparc IPX's and a sparc 10,,, can these run gentoo? they don't have much for drive space but if it was worth it, I guess I could fix that
thanks,
Rick |

Yes, I need those too but I need to boot the system first, I was hoping for a newer boot disk, I did end up finding a 2004 one on a mirror but most of the mirrors don't even have that. |

Due to the status of the kernel upstream, sparc32 is in an unsupported state, hence the lack of recent boot media. |

So that being said,,,,, anybody want a couple old SPARCS?
Maybe I should gut one and put an Mini ATX MB in one,,,,,
I have a bunch of these things, 10's 20's IPX's maybe even an IPC
thanks for the reply Weeve, I was sure there was a reason, I'm still going to try an install with one of the old disks, I'll let you know how it goes

Rick - I have built one about a month or maybe two ago - mine has dual 50MHz procs in it so it wasnt exactly a fast process - but I used the 2004.1 media and a recent stage and portage snapshot - it went OK.
Due to the total lack of speed from the box tho its not going to be used I dont think _________________ Toady

I still use Classics, with a gentoo built up over the years but still going strong. Classics and similar are great for mundane networking tasks: email, proxies, nameservers, personal squids, firewalls, etc. Classics are still much faster than DSL after all, plus the RISC processor can easily handle loads that make i386+ crawl.
So getting an older boot and even an old stage is fine, it's not like you will be ebuilding a lot. I stayed with 2.4 kernels, but on the Ultra will venture into 2.6 land. _________________ Being a Gentoo user means living in a house inhabited by a family of crazed carpenters. I have a sparc 5(110MHz 256MB Ram) acting as our ftp server. The internal drive bays have a pair of 4-GB drives in a software RAID1, and the ftp folders are setup on a sun storedge raid box. It has enough horsepower to saturate it's network connection without missing a beat. _________________ Gentoo systems.
