With the way licensing works with mpeg2 (I think, don't cus me if I'm wrong), your going to have a hard time find free software with mpeg2 encoding. Best to go with divx encoding (it's smaller anyway).
As for hardware I use a Hauppauge TV tuner and have captureed TV and composte just fine to divx. I use DVR http://dvr.sourceforge.net/

I hear there are Linux drivers for the WinTV 250 MPEG encoder cards now, but that's very recent and I don't know if it's actually usable yet. That's the only thing I've heard of that's anywhere close. |

Yeah , WinTV cards seem to have support but like you say , its sparse. Also the OSPREY-210 card looks good as does the InnoDV2800 which has Real-Time encoding , but both look pricey here in the UK and the support is *VERY* new ?? !!

Slightly off-topic but there is such a beast the Kiss DP450 - Toms Hardware is down at the moment so it can be found here http://www.sigmadesigns.com/news/articles/tomshardware012203.pdf
doubt it helps here though as I guess he already has a player. |

I recently bought a Pinnacle Bungee off ebay. It's a usb mpeg2 encoder with antenna, composite, and svideo in. There's a set of open-source command-line tools from http://bungee4linux.sourceforge.net I've set it up nicely as a pvr-ish thing which uses mysql and tvxml to display listings and allow them to be recorded. The Bungee is a discontinued product, however its successor, whose name I don't remember, is available and there seems to be programs for interfacing it on that bungee4linux site. |

Thanks all.
PCTV works fine and at £45 its a steal. MPEG2 encoding and supported under a number of Linux free movie SW.
Looking gud!
