I followed the ALSA doc instructions and got sound working on my Toshiba Satellite 3000 (ALSA module used is snd-intel8x0). Stereo sounds works well, but for some reason I can't hear anything when I play anything encoded as mono: some MP3's, internet radio, etc...
I feel foolish, because it seems obvious that the mono is switched off somehow, but I can't figure out how to enable it. Any help would be appreciated.

amixer set 'Mix Mono' 100 unmute
amixer set 'Mix' 100 unmute

But nothing changed. Running 'alsamixer' reveals that I can't change the levels on those three options. Is there anything else I can try?
