weird transcode crashes?

transcode (or xvid) crashes on my pc, can't figure out which. It doesn't seem to matter which DVD I am ripping. Sometimes it crashes after 5 mins, sometimes after half an hour or so. No error messages are written before it segfaults. I've tried ripping via dvdrip and via ripmake, same result.

Here are my specs:

CPU: Athlon-XP 1600+
MEM: 1GB
CFLAGS='-march=athlon-xp -Os -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer'
KERNEL=' 2.4.20-ck6'

All packages have been updated, no unstable packages installed.
