Hello,

I have a properly working 2.4.20 kernel with alsa 0.9.1 drivers on my system. Sound works fine in this kernel. However, when I try to install newer alsa modules (0.9.2 and 0.9.3) with a freshly built 2.4.20, I run into problems when modprobing:

Code:

* Starting sound driver: snd-via82xx
/lib/modules/2.4.20ll120503kernelI/kernel/sound/pci/snd-via82xx.o:
init_module: No such device
Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters,
including invalid IO or IRQ parameters.
You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg
/lib/modules/2.4.20ll120503kernelI/kernel/sound/pci/snd-via82xx.o: insmod
/lib/modules/2.4.20ll120503kernelI/kernel/sound/pci/snd-via82xx.o failed
/lib/modules/2.4.20ll120503kernelI/kernel/sound/pci/snd-via82xx.o: insmod
snd-via82xx failed                  [ ok ]

The output of dmesg suggests that the device is 'busy' or doesn't exist. It does however exist and it even works with the other kernel. I also see some things about IRQ conflicts, but I don't know enough about this to determine wether it is a probem or not, nor what to do about it if it is. I have been struggling with this problem for months now, so I would greatly appreciate any help!
Below is my /etc/modules.d/alsa file, the output of dmesg and cat /proc/pci.

/etc/modules.d/alsa

Search for via82xxx and broken on the forums. The driver got screwed up somewhere along the 0.9 tree (don't remember which version exactly). Just stick with the older alsa.

I'm running 0.9.2 (and I've run 0.9.3a) of alsa-driver, and haven't had any problem with via82xx module.

Maybe they've fixed it since then. That would be great. I think the driver acts differently on different VIA 82 chipsets, though. I know when I upgraded from 0.9rc6 to anything higher with my onboard via it would load fine but the sound would be really choppy and full of static (and repeat every noise multiple times). I haven't tried in months, though.

Just a guess, but you might want to try removing "snd-" from "snd-via82xx". Beware, it works in some config files, but not in others.

The driver in the .9 series is called via82xx NOT snd-via82xx so removing the prefix snd- is the answer. However the driver IS broken on SOME motherboards. For instance: MSI kt333 with onboard via sound DOES NOT WORK with the .9 series. The old driver works flawlessly though.

GOOD LUCK!

Do you know if the solutions works on other soundcards, like the emu10k1? I have an Audigy2 and I get the same error about it not finding it.
