Since theres so little application support for gnome2 yet (or I havnt found that many). Tell me what programs your using with gnome2, gtk2 and so on. Apps that handle FTP, IM etc. etc.

They are being developed, so you should better wait, I'm just so impatient. Using sylpheed-claws for mail and mozilla for webbrowsing (damn galeon2 and it's compile problems). But I have two gtk+ libs installed, so I can run old (none gnome 1.4) programs. You can even run gnome 1.4 with gnome 2. But what's the point just run 1.4 and wait until 2 is realised and developers of apps release their gnome 2 version.

Me to :(
I reinstalled my entire system just to get gnome2 only. But when I realised that all my gtk1.x apps had my old theme and gtk2 had the standard theme I quicly made this perl script to remove every trace of gnome2. Then I reinstalled g1.4 again.

Gtk2 themes are now starting to pop up (sunshineinabag, co.uk I think) there are some gtk+2 engines in portage (Crux, gtk-engines and thinice)

all thinice themes for gtk+1 should work with gtk2

almost all pixmap themes should work

so much for uniform look, applications:
gftp has gnome2 support
No IM yet
Mozilla + gtk2 != true
pan works
theres a balsa2 around, somone feel free to implement and submit an ebuild to me.

spider: you say gftp has gtk2 support.. When I try to compile/emerge it I just get the console version (with gtk2) even though I tweeked the .ebuild file, this was for like 2 days ago if I remember correctly. Are there some extra make flags to gftp thats not set in the .ebuild? or is there a use="gtk2"?

that should be set automatically. if gtk2 is installed it should use that....

as said, balsa is in portage, 2.0.1 is there, give it a spin, file some bugs against upstream source if you find them, they deserve the reports since those are the only things that'll even let them know the problems exist. (if a problem is blatantly there its hard to not fix it, especially if you are using your own application, that means that most bugs found are things that 1) the developers didn't do or think someone would do. or 2) things that are wrong in one configuration but work in others.

Ok I will install it when I get home and give it a spin. I have yet to install Gentoo on my work pc, just becasue of the time it takes to get it up and running will have to wait till my boss is away for awhile. I did an emerge -s balsa and only came up with the 1.2 version. I am guessing balsa 2 is in the same dir as that one and I just need to cd to that dir and do an emerge balsa2.ebuild or what ever the name of the file is.

I would try to install Mutt and then see if you can get it, if that works then I would file a bug report, but I have only been running gentoo for a few days so it could be somethign else that I don't know yet.

Well when I do an emerge --pretend balsa-2.0.1 I get a error about it not being found and possibly blocked by package.mask. I did a search in my package.mask file and found balsa-2.0.1 and it was not commented out. I did however comment stuff out in package.mask to get gnome 2 to install, that was recommended in other post. So not sure what is going on here.

I filed a bug about balsa: https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4095

A work around is to create the var/mail or var/spool/mail dir and then emerge balsa should work.
