I been reading all the tips/howtos to enable asian languajes to show properly under the console and in some applications.. in most they are ok but others not yet there..
for example:
e.g. 打电话
We get the first letter, 打, without any problem
but failed to get the rest of it, 电话 ,
when we tried to display them using terminal-based applications such as "less".
When we try it with a web-browser such as firefox,
the application showed it somehow but the last two letters, 电话,
seemed to have a different font which is very poor.

As far as I know, now the xorg-x11 & gnome terminal have quite a good chinese display & input, but if you want to add chinese display support in the console mode.
Here is some tip:
1.Be sure you enable the Unicode & change the language page to 'cp936' in linux-kernel.
2.Enable Visual Console in linux-kernel
3.Include a consolefont that have chinese char in it.
But unfortunately, tip 3 is practically impossible because there is NO consolefont availabe for chinese! Even worse, I have read some documents say consolefont funtion in linux 2.6.15 havn't support the language that will display more than 256+ chars.
There also a program name app-i18n/zhcon may work, but it is very old, I never try it.
the following URI may you find useful:
http://www.de.gentoo-wiki.com/TIP_Speak_Your_Language
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-294050-highlight-zhcon.html
The above information is just for your ref, I hope I'm wrong
