i'm not a programmer so i cannot comment from a programmers point of view, but i remember using a few motif based programs when using freebsd a while back that were really responsive. two programs that comes to mind are netscape 4.X and adobe acrobat for linux/bsd. so my question to you knowledgeable people and programers, why isn't motif used more often when comapred to gtk and qt? can motif programs be written to look as pretty as gtk and qt programs? anyways, this is something i've often wondered about so i thought i'd ask...

Motif is still used by many Irix guys that run Maya.
That said, I haven't programmed in Motif but have heard that it is really horribly designed (designed by commitee) and LOADED with bugs even today. That said, it is really old and looks incredibly ugly. I have yet to see any Motif window not look immediately like Motif, so presumably changing the look (other than colors) is not reasonably easy. Anyway, Motif isn't really comparable to GTK+ or QT. Motif has some libs, but it is closer to a window manager than a full operating environment like KDE. It isn't something that you really build apps with, but rather something that apps use to display their window bars and buttons and such.

By the way, you might visit www.openmotif.org
Motif is evil, BTW.
