I recently had a hard lockup when startxing, and coincidentally I also had updatedb running. When I rebooted and tried to do almost anything, it said xxxx.so was not found, any idea how to fix this?
I've re updatedb... nothing |

It sounds as if one of the following are true (with the limited information you gave):
1. You ld.so.cache is fscked. Try running 'etc-update' or 'ldconfig' as root.
2. There was some data loss or corruption due to the box dying while doing heavy i/o.
As I said, there's limited info in your post so here's some general stuff to look at or try...
1. Reboot using your Gentoo livecd and manually fsck the drive(s) / partition(s).
2. Find a common ground. (Are the same libraries missing? Is it all libraries - more likely a disk or linker issue - or is it one major library like libc?)
3. Take a look at the fstype you're using. Is it a journaling fs like ext3 or reiserfs? Are there any known data loss issues with what you're using?
4. Did it only effect one partition, if your drive is partitioned up for safety?
5. Do you have backups?
6. Is there anything in the lost+found directories (if you're using ext2/3)
7. Can you rescue any important files and rebuild the drive(s)? Box failures while writing is usually a Very Bad Thing(tm).
Hopefully, some of these things will give you a place to start.
Good luck. |

Have you tried running fsck?
