I am going to install Gentoo 1.2 today and i want the quickest system possible. Im running a AMD Athlon 850 MHz, 384MB Ram, 10 GB partition (dual booting with Win XP Pro). Any suggestions for optimizations in the make.conf file would be greatly appreciated

First question: Do you want to run bleeding edge (gcc3.1) or just cutting edge (gcc2.95)?

This topic has been discussed extensively in the archives. please search before posting.

Since you said bleeding edge, you probably also want to check out the GCC3 forum. Be warned, however, that bleeding edge in Gentoo is just that -- bleeding. There will be problems, strange errors, bugs with no fixes, etc. Not trying to dissuade you, just making sure that you understand what "bleeding edge" means in Gentoo. (it's not the same as other distros.)
