I've compiled my alsa drivers for the right sound card they are loaded
Code:
Module                  Size  Used by    Tainted: P
snd-via82xx            12748   0
snd-ac97-codec         37984   0  [snd-via82xx]
snd-pcm                65632   0  [snd-via82xx]
snd-page-alloc          5616   0  [snd-via82xx snd-pcm]
snd-timer              15976   0  [snd-pcm]
snd-mpu401-uart         3760   0  [snd-via82xx]
snd-rawmidi            14528   0  [snd-mpu401-uart]
snd-seq-device          4500   0  [snd-rawmidi]
snd                    33156   0  [snd-via82xx snd-ac97-codec snd-pcm snd-timer snd-mpu401-uart snd-rawmidi snd-seq-device]
soundcore               4356   0  [snd]

but when I start xmms I get a complain and he won't play any sound
I think it has something to do with my /dev directory only I don't know what

Is any sound working, say window manager events?

Try this:

Code:
play some_sound_file.wav

if it works, then your problem may be the wrong ouput driver selection in xmms. Make sure you have the Alsa output driver selected.

Cheers.

What is the complaint? That errormessage would help us diagnose the problem. E.g., do you have artsd running and try to access /dev/dsp directly?

I don't have artsd running what is it?
My error message is:
Please check that:
You have the correct output plugin selected
No other programme is blocking the soundcard
Your soundcard is correctly configured
My output plugin is: OSS driver 1.2.7
This is my /dev/dsp dir
lr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 9 May 4 22:53 /dev/dsp -> sound/dsp
