| Counting the portage tree and distfiles, how big is it? Mine is in the 12-15GB range. I like to install cool stuff for school even if I only use it once or twice a month, so mine is usually around 12-15GB. |

| I am about 2.5 GB.... This includes X.org, Xfce4 + RoX, Firefox... Pretty much enough for browsing and internet use... |

800 megs (on-disk), including gnome, inkscape, gimp, blender, regular x11 and glibc, anjuta, bluefish, e17, openbox, firefox and mozilla (kinda redundant, really), speechd, festival + hmm voices, gaim and some other stuff i can't remember... i think some office but i don't use it...
though, admittedly, the box's image doesn't include the portage tree and distfiles and i squeezed it into a squashfs... uncompressed it's around 2.5 gigs
my box at home is ~ 4 gigs tho _________________ "Confident, lazy, cocky, dead." -- Felix Jongleur, Otherland

This is a great thread for me, because soon I will decide how much disk space to assign my linux partition to on my laptop. _________________ Could it be? |

| 8.8 GBs. I really can't figure out why I'm using so much disk space. Seems like a lot to me. |

8GB. Biggest dir is /opt, probably because of Quake/Doom/RTCW PAK files. _________________ Hysteriagaming.co.uk is now DOT COM! New design, forum, articles, the works! http://www.hysteriagaming.com

| I accidentally voted 20+ GB when I meant to click the option above it. My install is 18gb counting /usr/portage |

I cleaned out /usr/portage/distfiles so now it's down to 7.5. I do have a full GNOME install which I plan on getting rid of in favor of enlightenent and blackbox fulltime. (I had it on there in case other people use my compuiter but I have no life and no one else uses my computer) _________________ If you get your problem solved put a [SOLVED] in the title!

Mine's only 7.6 gigs. I'm really surprised, I thought it was alot more than that. This makes me realize how much crap I got. (partition is just about 100 gigs full) Most of it is anime. |

so for gentoo thats a total of about 3.5G's
i run kde with goodies, and i use programs like nicotine, kile(tetex is prety big), matlab (installed in /home/matlab) and i recently installed all of sun-jdk and sun-j2ee in the hopes of getting sun studio 11 installed -- so far no luck. i run lots of lightwiehgt programs like pygmy for music, pine for mail, irssi for irc. i also have fluxbox, ion3, wmii installed for fun. i just installed lighttpd, but it sucks, so its going out the door.
all in all a prety streamline install, most of /usr is libs (i try many languages). |

It would have made more sense to add more choices, one range of sizes with additional tag "servers" and one range of sizes with the tag "workstation".
Server:
| Code: |

/dev/mapper/vg-portage
2.0G 682M 1.4G 34% /usr/portage
/dev/mapper/vg-var 7.9G 821M 6.7G 11% /var
/dev/mapper/vg-tmp 2.0G 33M 2.0G 2% /tmp
/dev/mapper/vg-opt 1008M 100M 858M 11% /opt
/dev/mapper/vg-home 2.0G 1.2G 701M 64% /home
shm 486M 0 486M 0% /dev/shm

Hi,
~18GB, with the distfiles (I usually don't remove them, until they are really outdated) and with some gigs used up by ut2004. _________________
