Does anyone know of any Linux Backup software that places a bootable image on to a tape when you do a full system backup so that if your computer crashes you will be able to restore everything on the hard drive with out installing linux and then restoring the tape. There are many versions for Windows out there but that does me no good.

Bootable tape? Uh... Didn't even know that was possible.
(As a side note: It's really disconcerting having someone else using the dragon! For a long time, I was the only one.) _________________ Gentoo:

Nah. You can keep your logo. I'll get used to it. _________________ Gentoo:

Bootable tape??? Can you point me to a version for windows? I've never heard about this before, so I'd love to learn more about it, windows or otherwise.

We just got the software in today for a bootable restore. The sales person of course told me it was a bootable tape I get the software and install it and it actually makes a bootable cd and or floppy disks (4 floppies) The software for windows is www.tapeware.com.

Ah, ok -- that makes more sense. I was trying to figure out how long a computer would take to boot from a DAT or DLT tape and I started having TRS-80 flashbacks.
If you can back up to CD instead of tape, you might look at mondo. Otherwise, I've heard lots of good things about Amanda, though I've never used it myself.

Well our Rs/6000 running AIX on a DAT drive boots up off of tape and it takes about 10 minutes roughly. All of our root tapes are bootable.
