I would like to setup Gentoo as a firewall server. I have heard that you can load everything you need onto a floppy and boot from this floppy on a machine that doesn't have a hard drive, say and old 486 based computer. Is this in fact possible, and if so, Does anyone have any links on the proccess?

I've never heard of Gentoo-on-a-floppy, I mean you even need a CD drive or a network connection to install the thing, most distros don't require this. I would use some other distribution, as there are ones specifically designed to be firewalls booted from a floppy. You'll find some good stuff doing a google search for floppy linux firewall. One often refered to option is Coyote Linux.

I Appreciate the reply. I did a search like you said and actually turned up a bunch of different web sites ranging from precompiled to build your own. If anyone is trying to do the same thing, send me an email and I'll email you all the links that I found.

There are lots and lots of single-floppy based linux distros. LRP is one of the more well-known ones and Leaf is a project that builds upon the LRP to offer more functionality.

None of these, however, are related to Gentoo, so off to General Linux this thread goes. :)
