well I have a msi kt266a pro2 ru motherboard with a onboard promise fasttrak lite raid controller with 2 ibm hds running raid0 and no matter what I seem to do I can not get the thing to work right while I'm installing gentoo. I've tried to pass the kernel options: ide0=0x1f0,0x3f6,14 ide1=0x170,0x376,15 ide2=0 ide3=0 ide4=0 ide5=0 ide6=0 ide7=0 ide8=0 ide9=0 but then I can not modprobe pdcraid after I get to the prompt saying theres no device, so I am unable to access the partitions. I have tried just booting without any kernel options which works fine, I can see the partitions, format them and start the install but about 5% way when I'm about to emerge rsync I get a screen full of errors saying the drives have been reset and my HD activity led is lit up and stays lit up until I shutdown. if I dont shut the system down, everything runs very very slow and I am unable to emerge rsync because it just stops half-way and does nothing. any help would be appericated.

well I was able to get gentoo installed but now everyonce and a while at random times I get the same error:

hdg: timeout waiting for DMA
PDC202XX: Secondary channel reset
ide_dma_proc: chipset supported ide_dma_timeout func only: 14

then my system is completly unresponsive to commands, I can still type etc but I can not run anything at all and my hd activity light is lit up.

Also make sure you are running the latest bios on that board, if not update it.

well I decided to not use the onboard raid controller for doing the raid but use the kernel software raid, I succesfully made the array (/dev/md/0) and I made partitions on it just fine but in /dev/md/ it does not have the devices for the partitions that I made such as /dev/md/0p1 /dev/md/0p2 etc.

I use that controller on my Soyo K7V Dragon+ Board and I never had a problem. Did you configure the kernel properly to a) use the fasttrack options, b) support raid using that controller?

I also have this motherboard... But I have no experience with raid at all. My question is: does raid 0 really improve the speed of the computer, like moving a big divx from one place to another?

Thanx in advance
