Hi,
Why am I seeing this? I don't have xpdf installed. I don't have it in my world file. Hell I don't even have it in my use flags. I have uninstalled ggv and gpdf as well. I want to get rid of this xpdf since all of it can be taken care of with evince and poppler.

any suggestions?

thanks.

Code:
localhost ~ # emerge -pvuD world

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Use emerge --tree to see what pulls xpdf in.

Hi,
Thanks for the hint. It appears, it is CUPS. So does it mean I can't have both printing and evince at the same time? since poppler and xpdf are at loggerheads. 8O

Just unmerge the xpdf first and then try to update again.
Code:
#emerge -C xpdf
#emerge -uvDanN world

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. However, if you would have read my post thoroughly, you would have noticed that xpdf appears with 'N' against it, which means that it is not installed at present. CUPS is the package which needs xpdf. Hence I don't know what to do as I need printing support as well as evince.

cheers,

Did you try it ?

Ok, I don't know what is evince but I think that xpdf is deprecated and poppler is providing it's functionality, and it fixed this same blocking problem with me (xpdf is blocking poppler, not opposite) :? .
Code:
[blocks B     ] <app-text/xpdf-3.01-r4 (is blocking app-text/poppler-0.4.3-r4)

Hi,
evince is the document viewer for gnome. It shows pdf docs. I depends on poppler. Here is the output of the commands:
Code:

localhost ~ # emerge -C xpdf

--- Couldn't find xpdf to unmerge.

>>> unmerge: No packages selected for removal.

Code:

localhost ~ # emerge -uvDanN world

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating world dependencies ...done!
[blocks B     ] <app-text/xpdf-3.01-r4 (is blocking app-text/poppler-0.4.3-r4)
[ebuild     U ] sys-libs/glibc-2.3.6-r2 [2.3.5-r3] -build -erandom -glibc-compat20 -glibc-omitfp -hardened -linuxthreads-tls (-multilib) +nls -nptl -nptlonly -pic -profile (-selinux) -userlocales 15,344 kB
[ebuild  NS   ] sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.15  -build -doc -symlink (-ultra1) 39,071 kB
[ebuild  N    ] app-text/xpdf-3.01-r3  +X +motif 0 kB
[ebuild     U ] media-libs/gst-plugins-0.8.11 [0.8.10] +alsa -debug +esd -oss 0 kB
[ebuild  N    ] mail-filter/spamassassin-3.1.0  +berkdb -doc -mysql -qmail +ssl -tools 989 kB
[ebuild  N    ] gnome-extra/evolution-data-server-1.4.2.1  -debug -doc +ipv6 -kerberos -krb4 -ldap -nntp +ssl 13,900 kB
[ebuild  N    ] mail-client/evolution-2.4.2.1  +crypt -dbus -debug -doc +gstreamer +ipv6 -kerberos -krb4 -ldap -mono -nntp -pda -profile +spell +ssl 11,233 kB
[ebuild  N    ] gnome-extra/evolution-webcal-2.4.1  -debug 151 kB

Total size of downloads: 80,691 kB

!!! Error: The above package list contains packages which cannot be installed
!!!        on the same system.

I think I will try to upgrade CUPS. maybe it will move to poppler. Thanks.

What if I don't want to run X at all? Why does cups need xpdf?

I believe to "Print to PDF".. I also believe Poppler now provides that functionality without needing X libs... :)
