Does anybody know where I can find the cvs build for XGL. Is it still documented anywhere. I heard the project was canned. Thanks.

Hi,
maybe if you look HERE, take the first hit and finally land HERE

Yeah, that takes me to a download. But since the project was canned I don't think there is a main XGL website. That is what I am looking for. I want to see the main XGL website. Freedesktop.org only shows the cvs. I want to see the original docs for it.

Would anyone like to write an ebuild for Xorg 6.8.x? _________________ USE="-patent -microsoft freedom" emerge -e world |

Don't worry XGL will be a module in the Xorg tree within a month or so. They just checked it into kdrive to do some testing before the merge into Xorg. When that's done I'm sure someone can cook up a cvs ebuild.
I'm running EXA now and its a disappointment. Then again I didn't expect much from it. XGL is the future. |

Will it be simple to get running? How do you 'use' XGL? (sorry I've absolutely no idea) I've seen a demo of something like that at the LinuxTag, it was really incredible! |

That's the beauty of Xorg 7.0 and the module tree. When its checked in as module it will be pretty easy to install. Depending on the changes made to the tree you might have to check out some cvs modules for a few things. However they might release the changes officially.
Right now you need to run XGL nested in a X server, so you would run 'Xgl :1 -ac' and then ctrl-atl-f8 and you have a fullscreen XGL server. I think also it includes a wrapper so if a server isnt present it will load one up. I'm not sure if they are going to move XGL to a stand alone server, that is what Xegl is supposed to be. However very little work has been done on Xegl and XGL is much more mature.
If you are impatient you could check out the kdrive tree from cvs and install it in /opt. Remember tho you will have two different Xservers, binaries and libraries on your computer. Also I think currently you will need either the proprietary nvidia or ati driver.
I'm just going to wait a month or so, David Reveman is really making some progress. Also in Feb he will release an OpenGL composite manager, compiz. So the next couple months will be interesting.

Can't wait! It seems to me like a major breakthrough in desktop computing (ah this eyecandy - imagine efects you could implement with pixel-shaders on your desktop!). Upcoming Windows Vista will have something similiar but based on D3D. Guess this will be end of 2d acceleration, and from some point in the future there will be only 3d accelerators available (instead of 2d/3d like today). _________________ [HOWTO]New freetype subpixel font rendering for lcd monitors |

Lol, glad i invested in my 6600GT AGP version in time, cuz then the AGP would be dead or ridiculously expensive than the PCI Express version !
I've tried the Vista 5270 Build, the effects are there for sure, but its far from being usable at this stage.. and i can only see myself disabling 60% of the new features to make it work fast enough for daily usage !
But i somehow love all my effects on Linux , maybe now Linux is for Work and Play ey !

Could it be possible to put a extra use-flag "xgl" to xorg-server?
I tried to compile it (http://www.freedesktop.org/~davidr/xgl-svn_100.tar.bz2) myself, but no luck
USE="xgl" emerge xorg-server would be pretty neat
I don't have a bugzilla account to propose it, if someone thinks it's possible... |

Did anyone noticed glxcompmgr that was checked into xorg-cvs three days ago (or something)? Anyone tried it out?
bedazzled: I don't think so. xgl are still too experimental, and i believe we would not have anything of it in portage before any real official release have been made.
Oh, and as long as you do not tell us where it broke there is no chance we could help you locate the problem.
I want to try this out now, but I am away from any playable gentoo-installation untill saturday... |

With the new modular Xorg I think it would be:
Code: | emerge x11-proto/xgl |
or something like that |

I builded it with these options (./configure --enable-xglserver --enable-glx --enable-xkb --disable-kdriveserver --disable-ipv6)
Then i tried to start a second X session:
1) Xgl :1 -ac
2) Xgl :1 -ac -accel xv -accel glx:pbuffer
3) Xgl :1 -ac -accel xv:pbuffer -accel glx:pbuffer
Neither of them worked, X ended abruptly with the following message -> *** glibc detected *** double free or corruption (fasttop): 0x00000000007c7810 ***
I spoke with Airlie (X developer) in #freedesktop@irc.freenode.net and he told me that he experienced the same issue with xkb compiled in, so i omitted it for a second build.
Well, now Xgl starts, but pretty useless without xkb.
ps1: No, it's not a glibc issue (i have glibc 2.3.6+gcc 4.0.2 if anyone wants to know).
ps2: I have Xorg 7 modular, ~amd64 arch and nVidia GeForce 6600 GT PCI-E GPU+closed-source nVidia drivers(8178).

I have seen that message both in nonfatal and in fatal situations. You are not using nxstys glibc-overlay? |

Nope, I am using this one -> http://packages.gentoo.org/ebuilds/?glibc-2.3.6-r2
Airlie assured me that it's not a glibc issue.
Well, for the time being, I quit up. |
