PostPosted: Fri Dec 23, 2005 6:12 pm    Post subject: nvidia 8178 and xorg 7.0, X doesn't start Reply with quote

I've upgraded today nvidia-kernel and glx to 8178, and X doesn't start anymore refusing to load the modules
Code:
X Window System Version 7.0.0
Release Date: 21 December 2005
X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0, Release 7.0
Build Operating System:Linux 2.6.15-rc6 i686
Current Operating System: Linux sotomayor 2.6.15-rc6 #1 Wed Dec 21 00:06:37 CET 2005 i686
Build Date: 23 December 2005
        Before reporting problems, check http://wiki.x.org
to make sure that you have the latest version.

Of course the nvidia kernel module is loaded. In dmesg I get
Code:
NVRM: loading NVIDIA Linux x86 NVIDIA Kernel Module  1.0-8178  Wed Dec 14 16:22:51 PST 2005
NVRM: PAT index 1 already configured for Write-Combining!
NVRM: Aborting, due to PAT already being configured

but this is present also with 8174-r1
Code:
NVRM: loading NVIDIA Linux x86 NVIDIA Kernel Module  1.0-8174  Tue Nov 22 17:48:37 PST 2005
NVRM: PAT index 1 already configured for Write-Combining!
NVRM: Aborting, due to PAT already being configured

After downgrading it works again.

Hi all,

I'm sorry not to be able to give any suggestions, but at least I can confirm this: I got exactly the same problem here, but with xorg-6.8.2.

Bye, smurfer...

Well, the only real option for now is downgrading to nvidia-*-8174-r1 :/

the problem is that the nvidia_drv -module is not copied to the modules/drivers folder.

Code:
ebuild /usr/portage/media-video/nvidia-glx/nvidia-glx-1.0.8178.ebuild compile

and
Code:
cp /var/tmp/portage/nvidia-glx-1.0.8178/work/NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-1.0-8178-pkg2/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/nvidia_drv.so /usr/lib/modules/drivers/

did the job for me. The ebuild needs to be fixed...

Please let the devs know by posting a bug to bugzilla for nvidia-glx. They'll get -r1 rolling.

libglx.so needs to be copied by hand too :?

Ok, X doesn't crash for me with glxgears but I do get this when I try to run it:

Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
glxgears: Error: couldn't get an RGB, Double-buffered visual.

edit: post above fixed that problem, all is well. :)

Replace this line in the ebuild:
Code:

local libdir=usr/${pkglibdir}

With this one:
Code:

local libdir=usr/X11R6/${pkglibdir}

After doing that it should copy the module and the glx file over. I'm not exactly sure why this works as /usr/X11R6 is just a symlink to /usr/ but it appears to work.

I just finished posting a patch on bugzilla for this.

probably running "eselect opengl set nvidia" will fix you guys up.

I changed that line in the ebuild (pkglibdir), ran ebuild /usr/portage/BlahBlah.ebuild digest and emerged nvidia-glx....all is well again.

Running the libvisual plugin in beep-media-player with this driver, composite, and RenderAccel caused my system to hard lock. Not that big of a shock, I imagine trying to render hardware transparency through hardcore opengl animation is gotta be really hard on the resources. Anyway I'm not worried because I'm running reiser4 so I know my data is safe and sound through hard locks/power outages. So now on to try to break more stuff with this new driver and composite  :D
