Is there anyway to tell what USE options a particular package was compiled with? Either reporting the global $USE at that time, or perhaps just which of the many options availabe a package actually used?

Yes -- find the package in /var/db/pkg/ and it should tell you what USE variables were used during compile time. You can view python's USE variables, for example, by doing:

Code:
less /var/db/pkg/dev-python/python-fchksum-1.6.1/USE

The same directory will also tell you what CFFLAGS and CXXFLAGS were used as well.

OK... that reports the global $USE in use when the package was compiled. But nothing about what use options a particular package actually uses.

Hrm....
