What says?
that happen on both a console inside your WM and a terminal console (Alt+F1, etc...) ? |

Hi,
in my box i have LC_ALL=en_US.UTH-8. Setting that to "" gives me weird results too.
Maybe you could try set your LC_ALL variable to en_US or ro_RO and see what you get it...
