Hi,
I was wondering if I could get any help... here's my problem:
I'm currently in the process of installing a fresh gentoo 1.2 on my desktop system (I'm typing this on my thinkpad ;-), and I wanted to use gcc 3.1
but I can't seem to find any info on how to do this correctly...
could anyone give me any pointers?
extra info:
- the machine is in the middle of performing a bootstrap (stage 1), so where do I go from here?
- I'm using an amd athlon, so I guess that there are some things to setup for it... what are those? what are the best optimization settings for this processor??
- does the kernel compile with gcc 3.1??
- I want to use the gnome desktop (straight into the release candidates to upgrade to 2.0 final in some time), does this compile correctly?? (including xfree of course ;-)
thanks in advance!
bye,
d.
(I'm going to bed now... boring work tomorrow :-( |

I think you'd have better results using the 1.3b version...

I agree with klieber - you'd be much better off using the 1.3b iso. You don't need to reburn a CD - just do a 'wget http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/gentoo/releases/build/1.3b_test/stage1-ix86-1.3b.tbz2' on a freshly mounted partitoin - it's less than 10MB. Untar that instead of the 1.2 tbz2 on the CD and preceed normally.
There has been various discussion about what can and can't compile - just look through the forum. Try the Gentoo 1.3b thread as well as the Programs that Won't Compile with gcc-3. I'm writing this from a Presario 1800T laptop that's completly gcc-3 from the 1.3b iso and haven't had any problems yet.
If you have an athlon, you can substitute -march=athlon for -march=i686. |
