Well, openoffice is one of the few packages that requires the newest version of the gcc compiler. Most people use the older 2.95.3 version of gcc to compile all of their packages.

But, good news... You don't have to compile openoffice. Just try:
Code:
emerge openoffice-bin

This is a pre-compiled version that should work for you.
Good Luck!

Fully agree with Two_Slick.

As i'm reluctant to switch over to gcc 3.0 i emerged the binray Version of Openoffice and it works fine.

I feel a little stupid to ask, but where is the executable to start openoffice after 'emerge openoffice-bin'?

I've tried to locate it using 'locate' and 'find'. Also KAppfinder didn't put it in my menu.

Please help me.

Code:
 /opt/OpenOffice-1.0.0/soffice
you can either add it to your $PATH or link it to eg /usr/local/bin

Well, I just read this post since I, too, got the gcc error. Is there a way to get the latest gcc without having to use it for everything?
I mean, I just waited 10+ hours for that 116Mb hog to download on my 56K modem... for nothing???
I don't think I want to wait another 6 or 7 for the 60+ Mb executable one to download... that stinks.
Anything I can do with this beast?
Thanks in advance.
Todd
