|
|
Ok, My company is buying me a new workstation.
The two I have narrowed it down too (same price) are:
SB150, 650mhz, 2GB ram
U80, 4X450MHZ, 4GB ram
conventional wisdom is telling me to opt for the U80 ...
the box will be running solaris primarilly (tho I intend to try dualboot) and under solaris will be running a SunPCI card.
Thoughts?
Advice?
Anecdotal accounts of U80 performance?
I dont have too much time to decide lol. _________________ -Tim Smith |

I think the decision is pretty obvious... IDE vs. SCSI, single vs. quad, PCI vs. UPA framebuffer, smaller vs. bigger cache.
Anything else? _________________ Gustavo Zacarias

ok, now the real question:
U80 4x450
or
SB1000 2x750

I'd go with the SB1000, it all boils down to what you'll be running and how much parallelism it has. _________________ Gustavo Zacarias

Well, its for a desktop at work .. and considering that I run an almost identical SB1000 at home (sersiouly, almost identical .. i just have a better framebuffer) I've been able to justify that I "know" how it performs etc etc... :-/
damn PHBs ... _________________ -Tim Smith |

The only advice I would give (not having used any of those models) is to give ay Sun with an IDE bus the boot.
The U80 sounds nice - but the SB1000 sounds much better
Personally I dont use anything that would make good use of 4 CPU's - it would be the SB1000 for me. _________________ Toady

I've been running SB1000 2x900MHz with 4G ram about a month or so, and I must tell you I'm in love
For example, stage1 in around 40 minutes is not bad at all IMO
just grab some speedy framebuffer and you should be fine with your new SB1000. _________________ Gentoo on x86, sparc, alpha, amd64, embedded |
