PostPosted: Fri Nov 25, 2005 8:48 am    Post subject: forum watches being turned off / dropped Reply with quote

Hi,

I regularly find all has gone a bit quiet on the forum replies and when I check out some of the threads I have been following I find I not longer have a watch.

Now it is rare that I take off a watch unless a thread gets stupid so lets skip the idea that it's just the dumb use who remember what he's doing.

significantly I have two threads that I was following closely one being the gcc 4.1 thread where I was have active dialog.

I had nothing for several days and went back to check it and found at least 4 posts since my last notify msg was recd. and that I no longer have a watch on this thread.

This is not a unique glitch and it has happened many times in the past on many threads.

Is this a recognised issue?

TIA , Gentree. 8)

Hmm, I had that happen to me a long time ago with the report thread, but wrote it off with having to do with posts getting deleted from that thread. I'll see if i can reproduce it.

Thanks for the reply. Any use my posting next time I notice one? Maybe without changing the watch status.

No idea how to reproduce it but it seems to occur fairly regularly.

OK FWIW, I have again been dropped from the gcc-4.1 thread: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?p=2904299#2904299

If I visit this thread it shows:
Watch this topic for replies

I dont know if you can back-trace to see when and how the watch was turned off.

I will try to avoid adding a watch for a day or two unless I need to post there.
regards. 8)

When you get the e-mail about the thread you are watching, do you follow the links all the time? If so, then perhaps the error involves the link contained within the e-mail.

Yeah, deleting from the report thread removed my watch of it. I'll have a stab at the gcc-4.1 thread.

Ah, good work.

now I very rarely delete a post but if there is some disfonctionality here you could maybe look at the effect of editing posts, especially where it is the last post.

I often make errors I dont spot in the preview and correctly them within a few minutes of the original post.

HTH 8)

Hmm, just tried it a bit here and it did not drop the watch, but you seem to be onto something.

gcc 4.1 thread watch got dropped again.

the watch feature is becoming of little use. I am going to have to start bookmarking all the threads I post to.

Any luck in pinning this problem down?

[Disclaimer]: Me too! post.

Just to add a little weight to this: this isn't just affecting Gentree; in fact, IIRC I have always expierienced this with the Forums.
I initially wrote i off as a bug that will eventually get fixed by the phpBB boys, but that never happened. Now I have made a habit of transiently bookmarking threads I care about.

But watches do get droppped under obscure circumstances; I recently got a reply mail from a thread I put on watch over two years ago, but lost the watch for another one only two days old.

yes I would say that is about what I see, although I dont know if there are not loads of two year old threads that I have lost.

It's either happening a lot more on newer threads or a lot more often overall. I suspect the latter.

(Thanks for the moral support )

Yeah, it got dropped for me too. Just tested (again) to delete a post, and the watch got dropped. Interestingly, the notification check box is marked as I type this so there seems to be some trace left since I have it turned off by default. Did you guys lose the watch for this thread now?

Seems like we have found the problem. All watches are supposed to be dropped if the deleted post is the first and last post, but due to an error it drops the watches if it is the first or last post. This happened recently in the gcc-4.1 thread. The problem should be fixed in our next upgrade.

Did you view the thread between Gentree's post and mine? You won't get new mails until you've viewed the thread.

Ah I see.
No I didn't view it in between. When I followed the link from the mail you had already posted.

I have also see this, is this related to the email links which reply with "the topic you requested is no longer there"? I can recieve that message even though new posts have been made on the thread. I guess that is to do with people deleting their posts

I would like to add to this report, but my error is somewhat different.

I also noticed that I sometimes no longer get mails, but, I just got a notification of a thread of which the posts made over the last month (and also before that) don't seem familair, and the second-last post was on 24 nov. I am very sure I didn't get a reply notification on it that day. And, I also remember that it was some time ago I saw this thread last. So, stopped sending me notificaitons, but suddenly started again.

Thanks for looking into this and solving at least one cause.

I will try to make note of threads I post from now on and report any reoccurance.

In fact I came back here through the forum index because I am still finding this is happening on the _majority_ of threads I have posted to an wanted to see if there was any news.

I found there have been half a dozen posts since my last visit. Same on the 4.1 thread.

OK we definately still have an issue here.

This was my lastest notification from this thread. It's dated wed 21.12.05
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?p=2971240#2971240

you will notice that on two occations since that post there were replies send. Neither the first group nor the one in between my two posts generated a nofication.

Same is true of the 4.1 thread now I taking into account the date of your post saying it was fixed.

The Gentoo forum is the only one I've expercienced this issue (as far as I know at least). Could it be something site specific, or just that it can't handle such an enormous amount of users and posts? After all, the Gentoo forum is quite big.

I believe this is because when i says you must visit the thread to get more notifications, then you muct actually be logged in otherwise it counts as guest user and the notifications stop until you revisit when logged in.

Is there any way of stopping this?

Also, has anybody noticed email notification thread links which take you to "post does not exist blah blah", only to find the exact same post in the forum with a different URL and my posts that I made in the "deleted thread" there exactly as I remembered? Is this a bug in the email notification system or what. I emailed forum-mods but the guy couldn't explain it, his response could be summed up in the following sentence "you dumb using thread obviously deleted".

The post doesn't exist problem is known to happen when the post that triggered the notification e-mail has been deleted. The thread is still there, though. Note the difference in URL:
Code:
post:   viewtopic-p-3001331.html
thread: viewtopic-t-418928.html

If you can reproduce it happening under other circumstances we'd like to know.

lol!

It's just happended to me on this thread. Did you do that?

My email is pasted below:

Code:
Hello,

You are receiving this email because you are watching the topic, "forum
watches being turned off / dropped" at Gentoo Forums. This topic has
received a reply since your last visit. You can use the following link to
view the replies made, no more notifications will be sent until you
visit the topic.

http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?p=3001549#3001549

If you no longer wish to watch this topic you can either click the
"Stop watching this topic link" found at the bottom of the topic above, or
by clicking the following link:

http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=405866&unwatch=topic

but this thread is clearly http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-3001643.html#3001643 from the URL bar. I actually had to do a forum search to find it again cos the link I got send is nonexistent.

Will somebody finally believe me now and stop giving me the "the post was deleted...", this post was definitely not deleted! :?
